turn fences on/off? vote now!

So, I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to add a feature to allow you to temporarilly turn fences on/off.

I'd do it, but there just doesn't seem to be any purpose, and would just cause more problems than it would solve. I guess the thing is, if you turn it off, and then move anything around? And then turn it back on? It'll just revert the changes you made. (It'll just think you've suffered a screen resolution change or etc etc who knows and reset your icons back to where it thinks they should be.) Just not sure what the point of turning Fences as a whole off and on temporarilly would be.

So anyone who has arguements FOR this feature, please make them

I do demonstrations via liveMeeting/WebConfrence/whatever.  And when I do I share my desktop and go naked.  I turn off all customizations and go with Windows Classic.  Except with Fences.  With fences I have to set up all my apps as running and then hide the desktop icons (which is a super-cool feature) but if I need a desktop icon . . I have to use Windows expolorer to not show the customizations.

Consider that one vote.

Ahhhh....the Wiz-guys start up.

Jeff, this is a wonderful app, and thank you for developing it.

I'd like to be able to turn it off at times, simply for privacy regarding my files and documents. The double click/hide feature certainly works well, but perhaps the ability to have it in "hidden" mode on booting as the default would be nice.

Alright, so I've adjusted the hide feature to remember whether or not your icons were hidden on reboots/etc. Had ment to do that anyhow.

Will continue to consider the viability of live enabling/disabling of Fences itself.

This is one of the most useful programs I've used in 20 years.

Having it boot into hidden mode is definately cool.

It would also be neat to control the box color on an individual basis.

I can see the above reasons for disabling Fences (although I like to show off my theme, it is a very subdued theme, professional looking, so it goes well), and although I would not use it except in very rare circumstances, I would say make it an option.

I have to say that Fences is a lot like KDE4's Plasma Desktop Container (I just started using Fences, been using KDE4 on another computer for a few months now), quite nice.

Hope you're liking fences! Yeah a couple people across the interwebs have posted about KDE 4.1. For that I usually point people to a forum post from mid 2007, far before KDE ever had thoughts about this kindof thing https://forums.wincustomize.com/157218  Never used the KDE rendition though, how well does it operate? They do a good job with it / seamless or ? Heh, had long ago already planned to do subfolders-on-the-desktop eventually - thanks to a new Vista control that'll allow that kindof thing - hoping I do get to it one day.

I guess as a "power user" and gamer. I don't have the business aspect of it. So I really have a hard time looking at it from that perspective. But, I do agree that the ability to have them remember the state on reboot is important. And color control for individual Fences would be nice. However as to the thread topic I just don't see a reason to turn them off. It seems either your're using them or you're not. Turning them off (seems to me) and recluttering the desktop to do a presentation seems counter productive to me. Wouldn't you want your desktop as clean as possible for presentations?

   Just my humble opinion...

I tend to agree, which is why I've made it an option...but burried it in the "More Tools.." are of the tools page for ppl who DO want it

Have to agree with JMB, I don't really see the point of an on/off feature but I can also see it's usefullness for some ppl as evidenced by Zubaz' Post above, so as option it would be useful for some. I've been testing for about a week now on my Vista x64 box and absolutely love Fences, no problems to report and will let you have feedback when I install it on my x32 Box tomorrow. Many thanks for a fine App, and the chance to test it.
