I have good news for those who were thinking about creating their own website for thier skins. Considering that I have been working on my site for a few months now... actually over 1.5 years... I can say that I think I found a useful tool for those who want to have their own personaly website in addition to the sub-url they have here.
Every other weekend, I will be willing to helpa few people start their own website using 1 of 2 open source content managament systems.
One is Joomla and the other is Geeklog
With Joomla, you can do many things and if its not in the original install, you can add it later. Joomla has the ability for blogging as well as allowing people to submit news stories. It has a calender add on, many gallery add ons (I am going to use Gallery2... maybe...) message board bridge between Simple Machines and Joomla (a bridge for vBulletin also availble) and more.
Plus, if you want, just like Geeklog, Joomla allows you to have a intergrated forum and users.
Geeklog is a little more plain jane, but does many of the things Joomla does and the rest, quite frankly, you might not need anyway. One major feature about Geeklog (I think) is the ability for users to have site specific skins. Plus there is an intergrated calener with public and private settings.
Special Note About Using Geeklog
Since my site currently being built uses Geeklog (the site is called Skin This and is part of esourcemagazine - of which I am trying to turn into a non-profit that helps artists and entertainers), if you wish, your site can run off of my database. In other words, you can have your own site and have a user base already waiting to interact with your site (thy probably won't but who knows...)
Of course if you deside to use Geeklog and also decide to be based off of Skin This, you'll have to follow some rules (like one, be a skin site)
other than that, use it the new install of Joomla or Geeklog to your wildest dreams! The WinCustomize subscription might be over, but that doesn't mean that we as normal citezens of WinCustomize can't help each other out to show support for the site.
I'll announce next week if someone needs help installing either Joomla or Geeklog. If you want to be apart of Skin This using Geeklog, let me know that too (but that install will have to wait a few more weeks because Skin This is still in testing phase)
