You did fine.
An OS needs an active primary partition on the HDD to boot. You can have up to 4 primaries on a HDD, but only 1 can be active. There can be more if you use a boot manager.
A logical drive is for storing things like data, programs, music, pictures, etc. but it makes no sense to put programs on a drive other than the system drive because they (programs) need to be reinstalled after a reinstall of the OS.
Put your data on the "D" drive and burn CDs of it, yeah it takes time, but if something bad happens...............
There is a lot more information in help & support, type in "partitions" or "hard disk". The manual for my partitioning program is over 100 pages - too much for here.
