Rather than start a new thread, I'll just jack this one.

I need to reinstall windows but my porn, um... I mean.... I have a lot of files that would be rather tedious to burn to CDs. So I used partition magic to split my drive in half. My thinking is that I can back up all my files to the new D drive and then format/reinstall C. Since I've never partitioned a drive before, I'm a little nervous. Anything I need to know before I obliterate everything through a ID-10T error?

For instance, I created the D partition as a logical partition. What's the difference between logical and primary? It sounds obvious but it probably isnt, which is why I'm asking.

You did fine.

An OS needs an active primary partition on the HDD to boot. You can have up to 4 primaries on a HDD, but only 1 can be active. There can be more if you use a boot manager.

A logical drive is for storing things like data, programs, music, pictures, etc. but it makes no sense to put programs on a drive other than the system drive because they (programs) need to be reinstalled after a reinstall of the OS.

Put your data on the "D" drive and burn CDs of it, yeah it takes time, but if something bad happens...............

There is a lot more information in help & support, type in "partitions" or "hard disk". The manual for my partitioning program is over 100 pages - too much for here.

Put all your "files" in one folder and check the size of it. Then, you can burn the folder to CD. Once you reinstall windows, you can copy your "files" back to the hard drive and burn the CD. I mean burn it with a torch or lighter. And, then you can get a gf and erase the "files".
