I prefer cnet. I get regular updates from them on software I've downloaded. BTW...Nexus Ultimate has just updated itself. I like the way it asks first. Unlike Firefox which just installed 5.0 on my laptop without so much as a ...do you want it? I opened my browser and it said Fiefox will open as soon as the update is complete. The only thing I noticed so far, knock on wood, is that the pages here aren't loading up slow like they used to. We'll see.

Well...if it screws up I still have the previous installer. I can always roll back.

Ah, besides the ability to mix over 15 different dock mouse over effects with the magnify effect, one of the things I really like about this release is how easy it is to use animated icons: no 3rd party docklet required, no launch limitations. In Nexus, animated icons behave and are used just like normal icons. As such, they can be assigned  to *any* of the shortcuts on the dock (normal shortcuts, internal commands, etc...).

Assigning an animated icon to a shortcut on the dock is as simple as dragging and dropping the animated icon PNG file directly into the shortcut, just like you would with a normal icon. And, if the animation defaults (50 ms per frame, animate on mouse over, etc...) are not enough, you just right click on the shortcut to access the Item Properties dialog, and then on the 'Animation' button to change the default settings (Nexus automatically recognizes animated icons).

Easy as pie.

If you want to go crazy with animated icons, you're going to need a lot of them. Best source I've found so far is the RocketDock library. Go HERE and then type 'Animated' into the Search box.

You can get the same, or even better, from Hippo; just using the UpdateChecker http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/ . Not perfect (there is no software resource site that has got ALL exisisting progs available...) , but very, very good...

CNET, for what I know, is not an original site, Doc, but a "redistributing" one, such as FileHippo, Majorgeek, Brothersoft, and many others...

I mean, fron cnet you can get the update only for the software that has been DOWNLOADED from cnet ; with the Hippo UpdateChecker all progs installed on your machine are scanned, and you get at once all the available updates  with download link shown in your browser, IT DOESN'T MATTER from where the previous version (installed one) has been downloaded

About security, I don't think one is more safe than another. I never got problems with any of these sites, and all are recognised from the Software Houses.

Personally I think you should only download from the original site (preferred method, since they might have important information, an even newer version and/or are trustworthy) OR from a reputable site like Cnet's Download.com.

And yes, I have seen virus infected files proposing to be cracks for Winstep Xtreme, Nexus Ultimate, etc... Even though it would be poetic justice to let users who download those files get infected, those too get taken down via DMCA notices whenever I run into them.

One thing that DOES bother me personally is how some bloggers, etc..., will go through what seems to be great lengths to upload the free version of Nexus to sites like RapidShare, Megaupload, etc... and then link to that instead of Winstep.net. It makes no sense for free software!

Bloggers who do that are stealing hits from the Nexus listing at Cnet Download.com (hits that help keeping the program at the top of the chart) and readers who come across those blogs end up downloading and running old versions of the software.

Although it's getting a bit OT ...

FileHippo, and other sites like it, are on twitter. I get daily messages on software updates and then check them out on the programs original sites.

I do use Secunia PSI which informs about patches for my installed programs, it downloads patches from the programs(sites) file servers.
