Microsoft's Antispyware Beta....replacing Spybot S&D

So far I like it. It's easy to configure, can be set for automatic scans and updates and I like the way it warns you about events as it is monitoring. I won't give up Spybot S&D or Adaware and consider MS's Antispyware another tool in my arsenal to protect my PC. It's too bad I never heard of this program before MS took it over, because I think I would've bought it then. I am curious to see which direction MS goes with it...stand alone app that you have to buy or a free resouce for XP, since you had to validate your copy of XP before you could download the Beta.

When I downloaded it, I had a choice of validating or not. I chose not to.

You're right, it works very well, but I worry who is keeping an eye on MS? Is this antispyware application spying on you? I'll keep my
Spybot S&D running as well, just in case.

I like it too. I will continue to use my Spybot,Adaware pro, and pest patrol. Except for Spybot, I bought the other ones. None of them pick it up as a spyware as of yet. I hope it will remain free. Smile!

I think it works great so far. It even found a few things that Spybot and AdAware didnt, so....

So far its been working good, checks every night for junk, pops up all kinds of warning when things do strange stuff, thats better then any of the others i had used.

It might remain free just as a way that MS can say they are doing things to combat spyware, but who knows.

SNK - be careful. I have a feeling that this new MS app is in itself a big piece of spyware. With all MS is doing with anti-piracy it would not surprise me. I read something about it here on the msg board.

I like it but the scheduled scan slows my home computer to an absolute crawl. I can't even get taskmanager to open while it's running.

Kona...Read the MS privacy statement included with the app, basically says they will ask before they use your information. MS wouldn't make a statement like that with all the lawyers hovering around to take a piece out of them. Perhaps some folks have misunderstood the SpyNet AntiSpyware Community reports option, which does send some information, but you can opt out and again they are pretty clear here on what's being sent.

Ande...great article! Just goes to prove what I've been telling people for some time, AdAware, at least the free version, is crap.

Thanks for the article link downloading CWShredder now. I've been to the IE-SPYAD site before, guess I'll have to go back and check it out again. Does anyone here use IE-SPYAD to restrict sites?

Kona... I don't have any real trust with MS either, but consider this....... how many people do you think are trying to catch MS adding something unsavory to this Anti-Spyware app? MS doesn't dare do more harm to their reputation by doing something stupid like trying to spy on your computer with this app. Besides, if you have a firewall worth it's salt, the call home can't get through unless you allow it anyway......

When it comes to browsers , I dont really care as long as they get the job done. Heck , ive got about 4 different browsers , Opera, Maxathon , Firefox , IE , ETC ....

But when it comes to security , I trust Lavasoft Ad Aware.

Try Spysweeper. It isn't free but you will faint the first time you use it.

I think webroot spysweeper is too sensitive on its scanning engine. It reports legit things as spyware.

Pest Patrol is even worse.

EDIT

Is spysweeper a webroot product? I tried one from Webroot and didnt like it.
