Christmas Traditions

I thought it might be fun if members would like to give us their different christmas traditions....i realize there are many nationalities of users here and it would be interesting to hear the diverse ways in which people spend their holidays be it Christmas or the New Year....always interesting to hear about different customs and traditions.

I will be the first start...for Christmas day we are going to be spending the entire day at my sons home along with our grand-daughter..we will have the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings....also we will have some yugoslavian food (my wife is yugoslavian) so there will be a large array of yummy things to eat...and of course the opening of gifts..looking forward to watching my grand-daughters eyes light up as she anxiously tears away at the gift-wrapping.

Hey butch123,you seem to have lots of fun at Xmas.Well as for us here in Cyprus,as a multicultural place to be,we combine some cultural elements from varius civilizations.Some do have the stuffed turkey custom,but the majority of the population still has traditional lamb meat,slowly roasted above red-hot slowly burning coals(We call it souvla).As for decorations,on the one hand we have the Xmas Tree as an imported custom from Western Europe and on the other hand we decorate a small ship(by that i mean a miniature ship,not an actual small ship)which is a purely Greek custom.The carolers singing-chanting in the streets are also a common custom i believe,only the Xmas Carols differ from place to place.On 6th of January,on Epiphany day,there is the custom to through on roof-tops baked sweets (don't know how to translate it but in local dialect we call them kserotiana),as a measure to cast away all evil,represented in the form of trolls and goblins(little black figures with pointy long tail).Yet there are more customs in our tradition,for it is both rich and unique,we even have different traditions at each village or city.Well this is a sample though,i hope it's ok Merry Xmas to you and all around here
