Are you one of the lucky few who has their hands on a new SSD? How well does it perform?
From my experience, I have an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD. Here's the lowdown of how my SSD performs:
Installing Windows: About 1.5x faster than with my HDD (I installed it both drives on the same day.)
Boot Up time: Not much faster, sometimes even slower if it has to configure updates.
Logon Screen to Desktop: Almost instantaneous (The "Welcome" screen appears for a fraction of a second) While my HDD takes at least 6 seconds or longer (No configuring updates)
Software & Driver Installation: About 1.2-1.5x faster than with a HDD.
Copying & Pasting files & folders: I average about 27MB/sec when copying from my Ext. HD to the SSD. Compared to my 2-4 MB/sec transfer rate on the HDD. Sometimes less.
Internet Download speeds: Barely faster. My peak DL speed topped out at 1.04MB/sec, compared to my HDD's 1.01MB/sec. So the network's performance basically unaffected.
Shut down times: Considerably faster. Takes about 5-20sec, depending on whether updates are being applied. The HDD normally takes 30-45sec. or longer.
And that's my new SSD's performance in a nutshell.
I bet some of you had better luck (and performance squeezes) than me. So far, it's worth it. They will probably become standard in all computers in like 5 years or so.
