JoeUser Cares: Haiti Relief

Without a doubt you have heard or seen the extreme devastation in Haiti due to the powerful earthquakes days ago.  This earthquake has literally leveled Haiti, and hundreds of thousands are estimate to be hurt, missing, or dead.  Larry (koop) came to me this morning and offered an idea to have a Haiti Relief and news blog where we can update it with the latest news, and links about the developing situation.  I thought it was a fantastic idea, and here we are.

Although we are in hard economic times, even donating a few dollars can help,and we have links to reputable donations that you can give to if you wish.  We will also keep this post updated with news.

Donations:

  • You can text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.  The donation will be added to your phone bill.
  • Donate to the Red Cross Disaster Fund - http://www.redcross.org/

This hit a little too close to home.  Families having their houses collapsed on them w/ their family members inside.  They frantically pick up their incapacitated family members and try to rush them to a hospital, but there's no way:  they're too poor for a car, the roads are demolished and filled with other people in the same situation, and even if you got there you'd have to wait in line.  No home, no money, all you can do is lay down your dying family member on the street and try to wash their wounds.   I go to work and then come home and play King's Bounty.

This hit a little too close to home.

I'm supposedly a bleeding-heart liberal, but I've mostly been burying my head in the sand too. It's almost too much to believe that Haiti of all places should take a hit like this. It's not like they've been diaster-free for a decade or two, or even managed to make much progress in stamping out the Baby Doc-style thuggery that's plauged their half of Hispaniola for so long.

Still, it's nice to see a MI-based outfit standing up for a beleaguered nation in the far-off Carribean.

I don't really like most charity organizations but the Red Cross comes the closest to doing everything possible to help people in emergency situations.  This is a good post Island Dog .  With the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina I hope more people come to realize that depending on who's in "office" , that relief does'nt always come when needed.  As far as I can tell the Red Cross is race/economic friendly to all.

I gave to Compassion International.   Although none of "my" kids are in Haiti, Compassion's offices in Haiti got ravaged by the earthquake, and they were trying to help kids before all this; let alone after.

I'm pretty sure nytimes.com is not widely-admired by you JU folks, but they just posted a very thoughtful, moving piece about some NYFD & NYPD folks who worked the 9/11 site and are now down in Haiti.

“At least in 9/11, you had a place to go to get away from the hole,” he said. “This is like 9/11 on the whole island of Manhattan. There’s nothing left. How are they going to come back after this? This place needs to be leveled. None of this is save-able.”
