I stumbled upon this website years ago, and I've been trying to find it again ever since, because in eleven short paragraphs, the entirety of the internet is summed up for me in one fell swoop:

The internet is shit.

Simple as that. I think this person makes some interesting points that are worth thinking about. And I can remember a time when the internet was something . . . I don't know . . . special. It's lost that specialness. In fact, it lost it years ago. It's replaced books with a computer screen, and actual research and work with bloody-freaking-wikipedia.

Oh well. To him, the internet is shit. What is the internet to you?

The Internet is now, what it has always been since its inception. A conveyance of information. The type, veracity and value of the information is up to the author and receiver.

The size of the net and the number of citizens that now have acceess to it have grown incredibly which has resulted in a glut of information. Some useful, some interesting, most not to the general populace, but imortant to someone.

Some useful, some interesting, most not to the general populace, but imortant to someone.


And it's silly what people think is important. Like freakin' Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The tabloid culture has grown to a creature of epic size and it sickens me.

the problem is, most of the time the information on the internet is crap. As someone who has to do a lot of research for school, I've found more times than I want to think problems, errors, propogated and proposed as fact. Oh well.

Come on, without the internet, we wouldn't be having this conversation. True, true. I am grateful for the internet, because it's gotten me heaps of new friends all over like you, Mark. Or Joe. Or Sally, or Emilia, or Amanda, or Donna. Or stay in decent touch with my brother, Peter.

But. I do think that that site makes some good points. The internet makes us give up many of the things we should enjoy for staring at the screen.

The best part is . . . I like to take online classes as part of my university studies, because it decreases the amount of time I have to be on campus (giving me more time for . . . amourous liasons . . . or work, usually work) and for one of my last ones, we had to write these nasty big papers on X thing we chose. Most of the students used Wiki as their main source of info. I, hating the Wiki, turned to my textbooks, other books I owned, or went to the library. Come on. Let's get our priorities straight.

But she won't, because "that's just what you do these days". Wiki has its uses (i.e. quick looking up something like somebody's death date or where they were born) but is not to be trusted.

My profs ban Wiki...not one of them actually accepts it as a good resource, and it's really not. Most only allow a few internet resources...some sources HAVE to be textbooks, magazines, scholarly journals, etc.

I don't know, I feel differently about this. I'm not giving up anything. In fact, some of the information I've found on the internet has actually added to my enjoyment of other activities.

I guess the bottom line is what the individual does with it. Using Wikipedia, for instance, as a single source of information is just plain lazy and ultimately a waste of time and energy.
