Forum Post Rate and Report Functions

I just noticed two new icon at the bottom right of every post. One says "Report" the other says "Rate". These functions are straightforward but did I miss some kind of Global announcement about these new features?

I assume "Report" allows you to report an abusive poster while "Rate" allows you to rate the quality of the post which may get reflected in forum rankings? If so, I applaud these new features.

Clicking on them. It looks like there are a couple of choices for Rating them and a comment box for reporting....Don't worry! I didn't report you!

Actually it is a pleasant surprise. BTW I rated your reply as "Insightful". I also tried to rate it more than once but it wouldn't let me (that's good). For your post the only choice I had was Insightful or Trolling.

I checked to see if I could rate my own post. I'm not sure whether it was different because it was the original post or because it was mine, but the only choice I had was Interesting or Insightful. I was able to rate my post Insightful as well, this seems like a bug that you can rate your own post.   

[edit] Yes. The difference is that the OP can only be rated Interesting or Insightful while replies can only be rated Trolling or Insightful. [/edit]

That's wierd, I can rate the OP as Interesting or Insightful. Replies only as Trolling or Insightful.

Edit - Apparently we were testing it at the same time

Rating systems in message boards are never worthwhile to any significant degree. Youre just opening it up to popularity contests, (digg, shoutwire, anyone?) especially if any sort of medals, bling, or other recognition are going to be attached to the function ( *shudder* ).


Now, if youll excuse me, I have to go get my posse to rave all my posts, and slag everyone I dont agree with.

I like the system, just think you should be able to rate an original post as trolling also, since there has been obvious trolls in OPs in the past.

one thing they are missing is that there isn't a trolling option for the OP rating, since I think the OP of that lame game thread was trolling. Yes one is entitled to thier opinion, but no need to be insulting about it.
