It's been about 30 years since I've eaten the stuff. But a recent forum thread got me thinking I should try it. So while I was at the store jonesin' for a snack, I saw it and in my basket it went. I got home, peeled the lid off and squeezed the can until it plopped out on a plate. There it was. Spam. Now what? The gelatin that used to cover the stufff was not there any more. That's a good thing. ...spam on a plate.
So I get out the non stick Calphalon skillet and pre heat it. I take my Kai Sentoku knife and slice the Spam thin. Olive oil will turn this into a healthier fry, right? Extra Virgin olive oil in the skillet and in goes the spam. Within a moment the sizzling begins and my apartment begins to fill with the essence of spam. A slice of cheap Kraft American Cheese and a couple slices of Brownberry whole wheat bread and I have my feast. I should have chozen a fine Shiraz, but opted for a glass of 2% milk instead. I bring my feast to my keyboard so I can spam while I eat my spam.
The first bite was much better than expected. It was very similar to the first bite of sausage. Very salty and very greasy. The next couple of bites were ok. It went downhill quickly from there. With a third of the sandwich left I started to wonder "what the hell is this stuff?" Two bites left and I was sure that I was eating fried cow lips or nostrils. Of course I had to finish it.
The verdict: I have never in my life appreciated a big glass of milk so much.
I realize that spam has it's place in this culture, but as long as Mac and Cheese is a viable option, I'll stick to spamming the boards. Excuse me while I light some candles and take a shower. I can't take the risk that this smell might stay with me.
