"Something magnificent has happened to me and something extraordinary, and I'm so happy I just can't restrain myself," said Tom Cruise.

The BBC is reporting that Tom Cruise took Katie Holmes to the Eiffel Tower and proposed to her. Katie is accompanying Tom on his French War of the Worlds junket, her hand sporting "a large" diamond ring.

"Today is a magnificent day for me," Tom told reporters. "I'm engaged to a magnificent woman."

Hide your couches, people.

They make me sick...I am beginning to think it's a stunt for publicity. Think about it...Both were reaching washed up status, then all of the sudden they are dating and have big blockbusters that hit theaters this summer...coincidence? I think not....

With a twenty year age difference and absolutely NOTHING in common but celebrity status and sex, what could go wrong?

Ugh.

Yet ANOTHER Hollywood marriage (if it gets to that point) doomed to fail.

Doesn't he have children her age? I mean....really?

Both of them reaching washed-up? He's a megastar and she hadn't even made it until she became "Tom's Girlfriend"

There's a 16 year age gap. She's 26, he's 42 and his oldest child is 12. Also apparently she's professing to be a virgin until her wedding night which might explain why this is her second (third? was she engaged to Joshua "Pacey" Jackson?) engagement. (previously engaged to Chris Klein)

I'm wondering how Mimi, Nicole and Penelope are feeling about this. Katie being the "love of his life" and he never having felt this way before ever.

Hmm, I don't think too many people would consider Tom Cruise washed up. (Just don't ask Brooke Shields.) Katie's doing better than most TV actors after the only show they are known for goes away. At least she's regularly working -- in movies, yet. Anyone heard from Dawson lately?

It is a truism, though, that a relationship between 2 celebrities will garner exponentially more publicity than either celeb individually. No sooner had Tom laughed off the charges this was all a publicity stunt than the two are engaged. Conan O'Brien had a good line about the engagement, "Katie Holmes's reaction was, 'I'm so happy. I couldn't believe it when my publicist told me.'" I may be cynical, but I'm taking it at face value for now.

I do wonder about the ongoing stability of the relationship. They are both coming off long-term relationships, he with Penelope Cruz for 3 years, and she with Chris Klein for 5 years. And they've only known each other for a few months! Yikes! Slow down, kids.

Really? I hadn't heard that one. I hope she's not disappointed. I hear Mimi had a hard time getting him to perform. I recall her saying he would never have sex with her because, he said, "I have to keep my instrument pure." To which she responded, "My instrument needs to get dirty now and again." (Paraphrasing, of course.) There may be a reason Nicole and Tom only adopted. Then again, they might fit in perfect together. The virgin and the celibate!
