After the freak storm we had here in the northeast, with attendant loss of power and all data streams (cable, phone, internet), for extended periods, I have been pondering moving to a setup that does not depend on physical connections to the outside world. (I still have to work out the pesky power question; finding an appropriate generator is going to be fun.)
So I have been exploring the idea of a setup which would pull the internet into my house over 3G or 4G, and then connecting via wifi to my accessories (iPad, Kindle, etc.).
So far, the Verizon folks seem to have the simplest solution to this, through the use of their MiFi Hotspot technology.
On the other hand, we are talking about a large telecom company providing a "lowest common denominator" solution.Certainly, the technology is limited in range and numbers of connections that can be made. I was debating whether plugging the 3G card into a router would allow me to extend the range (and strength) of the network and the number of connections that could be made...
I was wondering if any others had experience moving away from the "wired" world and what pitfalls they may have run into?
