New Dell XPS and ActiveX controls

Overzealous security?

I got my brand new Dell machine in.  It's the latest/greatest Dell XPS game box.  3.6Ghz Pentium IV processor built in with 2 gigs of RAM.  It's the "GEN 3" box.  Which means, naturally this week Dell has introduced the "GEN 4" box.  Little bit annoying but anyway..

It came with Windows XP Home edition. I haven't bothered to format it and throw on Windows XP Professional yet because the main difference between the two, from my vantage point, is Remote desktop which I don't really need on this machine.

However, ActiveX controls are problematic.  The home page of The Political Machine (for instance) never comes up. It just stops with "1 more item" downloading in Internet Explorer.  Same is true of the ActiveX based editor that high level access users on JoeUser.com get.  I've never seen such an issue before.

I have my other Dell machine (2.8 Ghz home machine) sitting next to it (that's what I'm typing this on) and the IE settings appear to be the same.  So I'm not sure what the deal is yet.

I'm wondering what other people's experiences have been with this. Has anyone heard of such an issue before?

The solution is to not use IE. Use Firefox or some other browser, IE is just trouble.

Just download Firefox.

But I did find the solution: I disabled a Gteko ActiveX control from the Internet Options->Programs->Manage Add-ons console in Internet Explorer and now all is well.

That is my wish for your pay version of JU Brad; that firefox has the same sort of functionality as IE here. I hate allowing Activew-X free reign on my Comp.

Ditto -- the only time I ever open up IE is to post to JU now. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of IE or the choice of ActiveX.

Don't blame IE. it looks as though your Dell came with some 3rd party software pre-installed.

Gteko is "a leading provider of support automation software solutions that enhance and expand automated and remote technical support capabilities." Based out of Raanana, Israel, Gtecko provides "Online support automation software (eSupport) for PC and peripherals manufacturers, internet service providers, software vendors and corporate IT departments. Downloadable small ActiveX control. Provides detailed diagnostic information."

Brad, it's probably just the security level your IE is set at for Internet sites.

Thought you were a techie ????? Your issue is with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and it's increased default security levels. I don't know any of my fellow techies who wouldn't know that.

i will have to say Windows XP Service Pack 2 is and has and will always have problems, And it will only increase ,gragully going in to selfelimination

As you Know some of the people who make skins are good while others are not..... unfortunalty so dont get mad if somethings is not as you expected. here are some examples: does your skin have basic coulors


as u see here this image is my desktop it does not have more then 4 coulors: the skin that is why it is good but in other workds a skin that has more then four coulros starts to get more compicated and will not really function good' will bot have the main things that a skin needs
