You know, the solution to having off-topic threads not 'dominate' with frequent responses is to actually have more activity on the SKINNING threads.
My inane "People will hit me, but..." was a direct response to a [then] drop off of forum activity specific to skinning/anything at all.
The fact off-topic threads seem to predominate is testament to skinning's ennui.
Yet when someone posts a few threads re a new Gadget/Widget proggy there's almost a heart-attack of horror....not to mention other recent accusations of 'spam'.
It's skinning threads on a skinning site, for heaven's sake....
Very true. Possible solutions?
1. More Galleries for other skinning apps. Xwidget comes to mind. I'd like to hear other 'safe' apps suggested. Folks suspect 'new' things, and that's not unreasonable in this day and age. How about some testing results? Not everything is msstyles or an equivalent. More niches encourage organisms to branch out, and serve as an attraction for potential customers to be exposed to SD software and just why it rocks. When someone runs into something new, please tell me.
2. Skinning 'classes'. How's that for a "Community Project"? Yes, there is the WinWiki, but a Master showing step by step (omitting nothing) going from image creation to completed skin would really do wonders. I might actually try to make one, and Po' might actually finish one. Vampothika actually did something akin to this, just not in video. Hell, a Journeyman, or Master Apprentice could do this. It doesn't require a Master (though it would be nice, Harley). Just shoot the vid when you start and resume. Mistake? Show it! Nothing teaches like mistakes. Put them up as installments. No timetable. No cussing.
3. Instructional vid on Forum anatomy (and Gallery anatomy) and how to look for what really interests you. You can go beyond the Homepage, though granted, it takes a little more effort. That won't just help n00bs, but but many folks who've been here for a while.
