For once, I did not get sucked into any Lifetime movies this weekend, but dusted off my VCR and enjoyed some old tapes while prepping the house for company.
Friday night: Party Girl (1995) starring Parker Posey. This might be my favorite movie. If favorite means I can pop it in and enjoy it any time, regardless of when I last watched it. It's whimsical.
Saturday afternoon: Desk Set (1957) starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. My mom turned me onto this movie years ago. I don't know if it's their best. I don't really care. I love the dialog, especially between Bunny and Peg.
Sunday afternoon: Irma la Douce (1963) starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine on FLIX channel. This was a first time for me, but I very recently read an interview with Shirley MacLaine in Interview Magazine, and she makes me lose it every time I watch Terms of Endearment, so I wanted to check out one of her older movies. Plus, both she and Jack Lemmon are so darned adorable. It was cute, but long.
Sunday evening: Shopgirl (2005) starring Steve Martin and Claire Danes. This movie, which cost me $9 to see, was the most disappointing of all my viewings this weekend. And I had hopes for it. The movie is a pointless act self-indulgence on the part of Steve Martin. The only redeeming qualities: getting to watch Claire Danes for two hours, and Jason Schwartzman was delightful, as usual. Kudos to me for identifying John Fedevich from "Almost Famous."
For next weekend - be sure to catch "Welcome to the Dollhouse" at 8pm Friday on FLIX. Good times.
