Fences 7 Beta 2 Now Available for Object Desktop Users and Fences Subscribers

New privacy features included

Hi All,

We are preparing to release Fences 7 and would love your help testing early features as we finalize this update over the coming weeks.

This beta requires an Object Desktop license at this time or Fences subscription license. If you do not have one, you can sign up here. Fences 7 will be made available for standalone purchase once the beta period is complete.

To download the beta, you can do so from Object Desktop Manager, or directly from your account page here under product downloads. Once installed, these are the areas of focus for this update:

  • Live Filtering & Search within Folder Portals.
    • On a folder portal, click the magnifying glass, or choose "Search & filter" from the group's menu.
  • New Windows 11 'Mica' material support, including new Light Mode, Dark Mode and system theme matching.
    • In the config menu ->personalization -> Match system light/dark/auto.
  • Improvements to layout management, including multi-group selection and moving.
    • On the desktop, drag a box around multiple fence groups and move them all at once.
  • Single Click to Open, Navigate to Root, “List” style portals, hide cloud sync indicators, and other app refinements and improvements.
  • [New] Privacy Masking
    • In the config menu, click Privacy for new controls related to masking desktop content when not being used.
  • [New] Mica enhancements
    • Improvements to scenarios with Chameleon enabled, light mode/dark mode improvements including outline being on by default now, improved color tabbed display.
  • [New] Corner rounding options
    • Ability to change corner settings from square to rounded with 4/6/8px options.
  • [New] General QOL
    • Under the hood there have been significant updates to many of the systems powering the UI, if you see anything not operating cleanly, let us know.

How to provide feedback: We welcome feedback, and for those experiencing issues, the easiest way to fix will be for us to be able to reproduce it in our labs. When sending reports, please provide the steps taken to create the scenario, and also provide a screenshot. Where relevant, system logs can be uploaded using the app, in About.

For current Fences customers – we will be continuing to actively support both Fences 5 and Fences 6 as we have, with continued fixes, compatibility updates and other refinements. For anyone who purchased Fences since Sept 1st onward, a complimentary upgrade to Fences 7 will be provided once the application is released.

Would love to know what everything thinks about the privacy mode and what options should be default. (Whether to hide group titles by default in particular.)

Long time Fences user and some suggestions that I think would be great additions:

  • Sometimes I want to create several fences quickly, it would be great to have a right click option to 'duplicate this fence'.  (I would expect that if the fence has items in it, those would not be duplicated.)
  • There are some fences that I keep expanded, and others that I keep rolled up (depends on how often I use the items within.)  I sometimes accidentally click and rollup my expanded fences - It would be great if there was a pin or lock icon when I hover over the title bar of a fence to ensure it stays as is.)
  • Selecting and moving multiple fences at the same time is still a bit buggy.  (They don't indicate they are selected (grouped) to move together and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.)
  • I like keeping all my fences the same width down the right side of my monitor.  While there is the configurable spacing top/bottom, there is no width snapping that allows a new fence to perfectly align to the width of a fence above it.

Thanks!
