I remember when the first 1gb hard drive came out. Radio Shack had it on sale for $600.00 US. A tower, keyboard and mouse but no monitor. Today that amount can get you a brand new, not very high end though, laptop with 500 times that much.  

You can avoid that up to a point if you set your internet connection to 'metered' in 'settings'.  It won't totally prevent it, because Win 10 will still deliver important patches, etc, but will not download other updates unless you check for updates and manually download them yourself.

Some good points there, anotherside, particularly with regard to a device exploding or catching fire on a plane.  For mine, any band all updates should be done when the device is already turned on by the user... not when MS wants to wake the machine and download/install updates via Scheduled Maintenance at some ungodly hour in the am when most users are in bed asleep.

Sadly, I have not found a way as yet to turn off/disable Scheduled Maintenance, but it is a major issue for mine, in darkness and doing stuff to peoples machines without consent or even their knowledge.  Many was the time when I shut down my HP 2-in-1 at bed time, only to wake to find MS had borked it with unnecessary/unneeded updates to things that worked perfectly well beforehand.

Yes, Microsoft has taken its 'big brother' attitude way too far with Win 10 and its somewhat questionable 'features'.

I had a floppy nightmare once, so I went to my doctor the next day, told him what happened and asked for some Viagra... just in case the dream came true.

He told me not to worry, that it was all in my head.  

While on the subject of floppies, I have a box of then stashed away somewhere with all my bits and pieces.  Don't know why, I'll likely not ever use them again, and I do have a drive as well, so it's not that I can't, more that they're somewhat antiquated nowadays. 

Shoot, even DVD drives are a bit antiquated and are being used less and less because just about everything can be downloaded from the net these days.  Discs aren't needed like they once were to install programs and etc.

I have a BluRay drive in each of my main machines, so that I can create hard copies of things I don't want to lose to HDD failure and the like, but I can't remember when I last used one to install anything, such is the availability of programs for download from the net.

You definitely right Hogged my system to the max and screwed up my Win7. Trying to tweak it to my needs as I know Win7 will be a thing of the past. But 3 more years maybe we all can kick'em in the cyberarse and get it somewhat back to a useable system.       

If you have Windowblinds, make sure it's at 10.6 or above before installing the Creator's Update.

Is the Creator's Update labeled as such when it shows up?

Thanks for the reminder. I read about that. WindowBlinds wasn't installed on that machine.

I wasn't talking about WB; what I meant was if the upgrade wouldn't go smooth I wanted Microsoft to pay back all the money that I didn't pay for Windows 10… didn't really make sense. However, upgrading Windows 10 can be seen as a cost; time and risk involved.

I'm not sure about this Windows as a service model for production machines. And I use the word “production machines” loosely. Any machine that is supposed to perform useful tasks, any Windows machine really.

I think Microsoft is working on making Windows more modular and easier to upgrade. Still Windows 10 is a big OS. That's why I chose to make a Creators Update USB-stick and upgrade from that.

Microsoft has talent and money, but with Windows 10 I feel their goal is set too high. A one-size-fits-all OS that is continuously updated and used by a billion people on all kinds of hardware. It's no small task to pull off.
