Because no IP means that skinning is not really healthy. And that's not Stardock's fault. The financial incentives are no longer there
It's understood that Microsoft has been a pain in the proverbial, re-skinning, but waning financial incentives should NOT be the reason Stardock discontinues support for IconPackager. It IS a part of ObjectDesktop.... and users ARE PAYING for it. It's there for users of XP, Win 7 and 8/8.1, so why not for Win 10!
Yes, business is about making money.... but it is also about keeping customers happy. Without the latter, customers will either go elsewhere or just stop coming, simple as that.
I didn't want to 'downgrade to Win 10 for this very reason, the default icons are goddam awful and totally ruin any theme one wishes to apply There are/were other reasons, but MS forced Win 10 onto my HP 2-in-1 and I'm stuck with it cos 'roll back' refused to run. Anyway, I am using a free Steampunk icon pack I downloaded from devart to change that Fisher Price look, and it does okay, but Iconpackager would be preferable as it does a better job without hacking system files.
Having said that, however, one uses what is available to get the job done, and being that I've had absolutely no issues with the icons/pack, and there is a free theme to change the UI, it is a cheaper option to the Stardock one. Now I have known about these free themes/icons for quite some time, yet I keep upping my OD sub because I like to think of myself as a loyal customer to a deserving company who has the better solutions for customisation. Still, without Iconpackger, the incentive to continue upping my sub is teetering on will I or won't I next time around.
I recently re-upped my sub a few weeks back because of having Win 10 foisted upon me, and there was no way I was going to tolerate that gaudy, horrible looking Start Menu a minute longer... and OD was a better solution than just Start10 on its own. However, ObjectDesktop is much better value with IconPackager included for Win 10... and therein lies my dilemma.
My finances are more strained since having to move recently, so do I continue to support Stardock with continued subscriptions, or do I cease and get icons a themes for free? The former would be more desirable, but the absence of Iconpackager for win 10 could be the deal breaker, and I'm sure there are many others thinking quite similarly.
At the end of the day, however, it is Stardock's decision to update IP for all Windows editions, though I do think it folly to dismiss millions of OD/Iconpackager users and not do so, given how many are on Win 10 nowadays... and how many who will be forced onto it.
