Hard drive making a chirping sound

So about every other hour of computer use my hard drive is making chirping and beeping sounds. It happens especially when I am accessing large files or moving large files. Windows says the drive is fine, and a SMART check says the drive is fine. According to the program HD Tune the drive SAMRT status is OK, but it says the spin retry account is above the threhold. The program also reports the drive has a power on time of 27450. I have no clue if that is minutes, hours, or days. I know the drive is old.

Should I replace it? All I have is a Maxtor 200GB IDE drive that was made in '06. It's an old drive as well. :/

I have it backed up with 2 different programs. Will not be able to get a new drive until April. :/

What is there to argue about?

I'm not trying to speak for Doc but I believe that Doc is just saying no matter what the programs you checked it with say about your hard drive it's going. When who knows, tomorrow next year. If you can't get a new one till next April as you said just keep it backed up some how so if it does go you won't lose all the things you can't replace. When it decides to go it will just go. At least you are getting some kind of warning. I lost one without any warning.

Good luck with it and hope it holds up for you till you can get another one.

for checking hard drive health, I use both crystal disc info AND hard disc sentinel, while crystal disc info gives a quick good caution,bad indication and other info in plain language, it is limited to just those ratings, and hard disc sentinel gives a percentage of drive health.

I'm in the midst of swapping out an old 1TB drive that's SMART detailed check gives a fitness of '0'.

I'm getting the odd CRC errors which prevent image backups....and on this drive is all the 'stuff' I use [not the OS]...but work/skinning/music/etc ... so it's imperative I get off this drive asap.

I'll swap out to a 2TB that's still in its wrapper...and use CDCheck to verify there are no unreadable files due to CRC.

Once I know True Image can do an image of the new drive I'll feel a little safer.

Incidentally....first thing that alerted me to the problem was Syncback ...which spits out an error log if it can't backup a file....

I used to have Maxtors of that era. They all failed, and all soon after making that noise you describe.

What is there to argue about?

This is what happened to me...bet its linear read speed was cocked.

Acronis can't clone a dying disk...good luck with the CDCheck software...

Nope....'cloning' it via straight file swapping to an external docked 2TB ....at snail-pace...USB2.

6 hours down....only 8 to go.

There's a LOT of files to copy....

A lot depends on what the problem is with the original disk...in my case, well...grrrr should suffice.

Well I sort off solved the issue. I am using my backup drive for my main drive. My backup drive is a 650 GB laptop drive. All I did was create a new partition and used that to install Windows. Now I have to worry about backing up my data. I can store my documents and pictures on the cloud (yeah, yeah, I know...). I am just worried about where to put my 30 GB worth of music.

Put your music [by copy] onto the 650gig drive...so if/when the other one dies you haven't lost the music too...
