IconPackager problem

newly installed packages keep disappearing.

Hi all,

This is my very first post here, but I have been "lurking" and have found many posts to be helpful. although I purchased Object Desktop in February, and have been having an absolute blast playing with and tweaking all sorts of things.   < woohoo! >

I have just run into a problem with IconPackager. I went on an icon binge and downloaded a ton of packages. I have installed most of them, but several of them simply disappeared.   They appeared to complete the installation process, and I even previewed several of them, but the next time I opened IP, some of them were gone. Some of them are .iptheme files in the older format, but the documentation at Stardock.com says that the old format is supported by the current version, so I don't see how that would matter. Several packages with the extensions .ip and .iconpackager have also disappeared, and at this point, I cannot see any pattern in which ones disappear, and which ones "stick." 

I purchased Object Desktop in February, and I'm running Windows XP, service pack 3. I have searched the wiki, and read through the IconPackager manual on Stardock.com. I couldn't find anything that seemed even remotely related to this problem. So now, the community is my only hope!   Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and/or how to fix it? I would be grateful for ANY input.

Have you been just double-clicking on the file to install it? That has been a bit buggy for me, soI do it this way. Not as simple, but it works.

For the ones that disappear, download them and save them somewhere, then from within IP config, select Add Icon Package/Install from disk. Browse to the IP file you just downloaded and add it that way.

 Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Documents\Stardock\IconPackager and make sure the folder with that package name is actually in there.If not,drop it in there. Now the IP should show in the list and the preview and stay there.

Hi Elariel, sorry to hear that you are having a problem with IconPackager. I use Win7 myself and it has been awhile since I used XP , but I will try to help you as much as I can. All of your packages that you downloaded should be in your desktop library that is  = C:\users\Public\Public Documents\Stardock\IconPackager   -- inside the folder of each package should be an executable that ends in  .iconpackage. You only need to double click that icon to automatically load it into the IconPackager User interface. Some IconPackager themes that you may download, are not always automatically installed into the User Interface and need to be loaded manually. Therefore , it's important for you to know where your new downloads from Stardock are automatically being stored so that you can track them down and get them loaded into your IconPackager Program. I always make it easy on myself and make sure that new downloads appear on my desktop so that I don't have to hunt for them and when I'm finished intalling I can move them wherever I want. My uploaded packages do not install automatically to IP ,so the user must install them manually. Packages like mine should arrive at your computer in the form of a zip file. Simply extract to your desktop. It should be a folder with all the icons contained inside. Open the folder and the very last icon in the folder should be an IconPackager icon with the ending extention like this =  .iconpackage   .....simply double click on that icon and it should automatically load the entire package into the IconPackager program User Interface. I suspect that perhaps the IconPages that you downloaded that "disappeared" fit this analogy and are simply hiding in a folder that you inadvertantly downloaded to. If you don't want to hunt around for them, you could simply re-download, but this time specify a location to store the download. I really hope this helps you. If you have a further difficulty, simply come back here and let us know if you get stuck or if you cannot get the problem resolved.......  -- Ace ---

That's the buggy part, Ace.   Double-clicking to add a package is inconsistant.  Doing that with many packages will get them to appear to load in IP, but as soon as you close and reopen IP, the package will be gone. When that happens I have to install from within IP config, select Add Icon Package/Install from disk. Browse to the IP file  .iconpackage  and add it that way. then as  I said above, verify the entire folder containing the actual icons went where they need to be.

I had this issue a couple of times... for Iconpackager to find missing sets that were within the directory folder I clicked on 'Rebuild Icon Cache' in Settings or 'Refresh' under Icon Package Options above the icon set previews on the front page.

That same exact thing happened with me a few weeks ago on Windows 7-   and yes, I was double clicking them too.     Will make sure to "install from disc" everything I lost-  luckily I saved all the setups !

The easiest way...

Instal from disk (if .iconpackage theme) then apply it....

right click on applied IP- ZIP Package, save it on desktop....

close IP( before that you can apply another package) - close IP.

Open IP, there is no package inside, close again.

Double click on saved ziped package on desktop(.ip file)

it open automaticly IP again and it is quasi installed in IP and in PublicDoc/Stardock...etc folder.

 

The problem is ...two different IP files....one is .iconpackage , another is .ip(ziped) file.....

first one doesnt stay in IP( temporaraly only-after IP close is not there anymore),

another one install IP icons in PubDoc/ Stardock/IconPackager folder.

AHA! Thank you everyone, all the above advice did solve my problem. I WAS already installing them from within IP by choosing "install package from disk" but the individual files and .icl files were NOT transferring over to the IconPackager folder where all the themes are stored. In fact, subfolders for the individual packages that disappeared were not even being created in the directory. So, as suggested, I'm simply moving the appropriate folder to the Iconpackager folder before installing manually, and everything shows up perfectly.

This is the first time I've requested help from the community, and I was stunned at how fast and helpful the replies were! I hope it won't be too long before I can contribute by answering questions too.
