Like just about everything and anything in life, customizing the computer moves on.

I still have a computer that has XP, and one that has Windows 7. I'm not looking for new things to load on the XP computer and don't use it much these days.

From what I've read I gather it's primarily:

Some skinners no longer have XP and it's tough to skin an o/s that's not installed.

Skinning XP in addition to 7 adds a significant amount of work even if XP is still installed.

Like you dkmjam I'm still riding the dinosaur, I'll probably ride it until it drops. The world does move on though, such is the life of the computer.

That being said, I only skin for 7 because my old XP kicked the bucket over a year ago, I needed a computer for work, and it didn't make any sense to get one with a Legacy OS on it, since the Vista with the free Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade cost about the same. If anybody would like me to skin for XP and doesn't mind footing the bill to upgrade me to Windows 7 Professional so I can skin in XP mode, I would be more than willing make XP versions of my skins.

You can install this on your Win7 and run a virtual xp machine. All you would need is a valid xp disk and product key. I used it for a while problem free.

It's time to cut the strings to XP from a customizing standpoint. While I sympathize with those using it there are many many better skins out there for XP than 7 ( and much more functional ). Keep a version of Windowblinds that supports XP but move on and drop it from future releases.

Thanks, Noah. I've had way more personal drama going on at home for the past 4 days than I could handle (broke, trapped, possibly pending divorce proceedings), and I really needed to laugh.

I like my XP and have no intentions of dumping it. I have alot of treasured old Vintage After Dark screensavers and other programs that while uncompatible with XP- I can still install on XP because of XP's compatibility wizard. I tried to install them on my father's Windows 7 PC

but they didnt install properly-

For me it's not just a matter of affordablity and being thrifty- not to keep changing over to something new unless really necessary, but

it's also a matter of really being comfortable with my XP and all the treasured programs that I can still run on it, that are not

compatible on Windows 7, etc.

My father has Windows 7, and I do also appreciate Windows 7 as well-- it really has some beautiful touches to it, but I am happy

with my XP as well- and even own a licensed copy of Windows XP to re-install in case it ever crashes. When I get the urge, I borrow my

father's Windows 7 when he's not around- but at least I still have XP on my PC so I can also enjoy my older programs on it that won't work

on Windows 7.

I'm not the sort of gal that has to keep junking a good electronic just because something newer came along. My saying is "Make new Friends, but

Keep the Old- one is Silver but the other is Gold

ps... just want to thank VStyler , Lightstar and other skinners who are still able to make XP compatible versions of thier skins for Windowblinds--cuz I have been downloading and appreciating all of your skins and love them I would like to install Windowblinds on my Father's Windows 7 PC for him, but sadly, he doesnt want any skinning programs on his PC and has made a point to tell me to keep my hands off installing any skinning programs, except for wallpapers. So I was able to install alot of nice wallpapers and screensavers for him, but he doesn't want Windowblinds on his computer. One day when he gets sick of his old Windows 7 and decides to go onto Windows 8, I"ll buy his PC off of him, and then will have both XP and Windows 7 . When that happens, then watch out! I'll be downloading everyone's skins here!! There's a heck of a lot of nice Windows 7 skins i have my eyes on and am downloading some to keep on file for if he changes his mind.

in the meantime, I probably may always have my XP for many more years to come-- with all my favorite vintage programs on it

Karen, I'm not suggesting that you do anything illegal, but I can tell you this. The Valid XP Keys you have will work with any "matching" XP disc/iso.

If your key is for XP Home Premium, and you have a friend who has an XP Home Premium disc/iso, you can legitimately use it with your key and have a legal copy of XP on your PC.

If your key is for XP Pro, then you need an XP Pro disc.

When you buy an OS, you pay for the key, not the disc itself.

When I switched from Win 7 32 bit to 64 bit, the microsoft store let me download the 64 bit for free because I had a legit key. They might do the same for you, but then, your key is for an OEM version of XP, so I don't know how that would work.

All said, if you can get your hands on an XP disc that matches the level of XP that your key is for, you can use it, legally.

In one way you can consider yourself lucky. You have a veritable treasure chest of truly great classic WindowBlinds that will work fine on your machine, while those of us on Win7 have had to say good-bye to many of them unless they get updated.

I have to disagree...I have done it several times, as long as it's the same version of XP.

I did once, only once, have a problem with activation, and it was cleared right up with a phone call to MS.

If you have the original Windows disc then yes it should work. But when you buy an OEM computer from HP/Dell etc, they don't give you that disc, you're stuck with the OEM install and that's it. That's why they make you create your own recovery discs because you can't just reinstall Windows without it.
