I myself have been trying to scale back on newer techonlogies. I think that we've entered an age where privacy is obsolete. Here's my two cents about what I use/don't use:
-> I don't own a smartphone, nor do I want one (anymore) after finding out about how it tracks your every move and site you visit and app you purchase (they're GPS navigated right? So big brother will know EXACTLY where you are at any given time)
->I'm a dedicated Desktop PC user. Never a laptop, tablet, or smartphone for me. The two latter choices are pathetic excuses for primary computing devices with measly "app stores" which only supply hundreds of thousands of "apps". Not to mention a huge lack of customization.
->Still pay cash for everything (except online purchases). Less chance of having my identity stolen.
->Social Networking is out of the question. I'll never use social networking ever. Isn't e-mail good enough?
->Technology has no innovation anymore (excuse me, I almost forgot stereoscopic 3D). Everything these days is just a mashup or combination of multiple pre-existing functions in one device. One reason why I will hopefully never use a tablet or "hybrid" device. When was the last time we had a "true" invention?
->And don't get me started on the media. All forms of media have gone downhill considerably, even since the '90's. All the crappy movie remakes which shouldn't exist in the first place. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." We need new innovation, new original shows (that don't suck), new original movies, and so on.
-> And worst of all is that nowadays, tech is made with profits in mind. Companies just want to find their new "cash cow" and for suckers (I mean consumers) to buy their gimmicky useless junk (not all of it's junk, but a lot of it is). I miss the days when people made "quality" media, devices, and inventions. Where people came before profits. I probably wasn't alive during those days but still. It's all about the money now. *sigh*
On the upside:
->Having "high-speed" internet blows dial-up and DSL out of the water!
->Playing video games on the go with mobile platforms. (I don't mind portable gaming, but portable computers just suck bad! Almost no room for hardware customizations and/or upgrades, even for laptops)
->Having automobiles to go places way further than we could walk (although driving within a quarter-mile radius to your destination is just sheer laziness [and a waste of gas & stress on the engine])
->Flash memory is Awesome! Way faster and cooler (both figuratively & literally) than mechanical hard drives.
-> A little off topic, but the Skins on this site are VERY innovative, original and cool! So are DesktopX widgets, IconPackages, and Docks. I wonder what new tech we'll be getting with WindowBlinds 8?
Back when I was little, I used to think the future and all this technology would be a far superior way to live, but up 'til about four/five years ago, I started to realize the truth. Technology is making us STUPID! Especially in the age of Facebook, Twitter, SmartPhones (Or I should say "DumbPhones" 'cause a lot of dumb people use them. iRONIC.)
I know my post is long and boring, but I wanted to voice my opinion of the matter, that's all.
