Was Object Desktop just a rental?

As I thought I understood it, when I purchased OD I would get current versions of all the programs available within and updates for a year. When my year ran out I would then just be stuck with the current versions and not have access to any new updates. My year ran out yesterday and now Impulse is saying I can't redownload Parts of OD I already had access to during the active period. Please don't tell me this is just a rent for a year then we take our programs back type of setup. I was planning on resubbing, but finances are keeping that from happening at the moment. If this is indeed the setup then I'll need to rethink that.

General...

I'd expect it would be case 1.

However...

As with any online purchase/download of software/film/music/whatever it is imperative that the purchaser protects his purchase by backing up the download/product in safety - before any one of a host of disasters may befall him rendering further access unavailable.

I don't specifically worry about Stardock's products as I have no intention of 'ever' not being a Subscriber/supporter of SD and/or its products....however...I have quite a few games and important software [including Technet access to the OS itself] and have on every single occasion ensured I have backed up whatever I have bought.

Agreed. Even if you are a current subscriber, make backups.

It was a general rant Aesir, not directed at you at all. It's just a rather strong reminder about those "taking a cold shower" and "getting flies with honey" aphorisms. I suppose it's ok if you just want to vent, but that's all you're getting out of the deal. Probably losing if you're getting a "reputation". It's a small world out there.

What are you basing this on. Brad himself replied that SD can't be expected to maintain every revision of every program in this thread. This leads me to believe Case 1 is not the way to go. However, if you have "insider info" or better yet written policy it would go a long way to ease the confusion. At this point my thinking is that you should download .exe from impulse driven site the day before your sub expires AND archive through impulse. Then install the the impulse driven .exes and make sure they have the latest revisions, if not update using your archives! Its troublesome and a huge headache for paying customers but since there is no clear answer better safe then sorry!

OK, I just picked up on this from another thread and I am not bothered about the need to archive everything myself but I have just spotted a slight flaw in the mechanism.

With Object Desktop I am entitled to applications which are not suitable for my current operating system.

Impulse (correctly) stops me from trying to install these but also stops me from "downloading and archiving" them for later use.

So, I am unable to "protect my investment" as if I change operating system after my subscription runs out I wont be able to install the software I am entitled to from the archive as it doesn't exist.
