TV and movie theme songs

which were your favorites?

I was a musician once upon a time and have always had a special appreciation for instrumental music,mostly progressive rock,but there is a subgenre of music that gets overlooked a lot...themesongs.

I think part of the reason is we only get about 1 and a half minutes and then the show starts...or a commercial blares in.But if you ever get to hear the extended versions,some of them are incredible.It dosnt hurt if just hearing the first few note conjures up warm fuzzies from the past or lets you know something good is about to happen.

Some of my favorites are...

Voyage to the bottom of the sea...moody,dramatic and really fit the show.

Space 1999...wow,mega jumping bass,pseudo porn track guitar alternating with blaring horns and strings...too freakin' cool.

Mission Impossible...inyer face bassline,jazzy flute,big horns...KAT cool man.

Monty Pythons flying circus...wth!?...this is some countries national anthem,they played it every morning while my flight marched by in the morning(EARLY in the morning) while I was in bootcamp.We got in trouble EVERY morning for laughing as we went by...guess the DI wasnt a PBS viewer.

Peter Gunn...many a stripper twirled her tassles to this one...its just plain raunchy.

Red Dwarf...hard to picture this song with a scifi show...til you know the story about Lister's plans for life after the space corp."goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes"

Lost in Space...spectacular John Williams.There were 2 of them and both were great.

Dr. Who...weeeeiiiiiiiirrrrrrrd man.

Buck Rogers in the 25th century...show was silly but the theme was terrific.(WILMA DEARING! oh my!)SouthPark did a hilarious take on the whole opening montage with Cartman...you gotta see it if you were even a minor Buck Rogers fan.

James Bond...the main theme is truly iconic and 2 of the movie title themes were among my favs...You only live twice,and Tomorrow never dies.

So what are some of you favorites?

The themes from Perry Mason, Dragnet and Highway Patrol would snag you.

Al Hirt playing trumpet on Flight of the bumblebee on the Green Hornet. Nelson Riddle's Batman Theme and Henry Mancini's Pink Panther Theme.

The theme from Ironside by Quincy Jones off the Smackwaterjack album was a priceless and brilliantly composed over-all masterpiece also used in the movies Five Fingers of Death and Kill Bill Vol. 2

Who didn't know the lyrics to Gilligan's Island, who didn't snap their fingers once they heard the first four notes to the Addams Family song?

William Tell Overture from the Lone Ranger?

Actually vice versa but yep composed by Gioacchino Rossini August 3, 1829! That ones a very fun and equally melodramatic Timpani part to play!

What most people don't realize is that this song is merely the fourth part to the original opera.

Prelude - a slow passage starting with a passage for five cellos
Storm - a dynamic section played by full orchestra
Ranz des Vaches (call to the dairy cows) - featuring the Cor anglais (English horn)
Finale - ultra-dynamic "cavalry charge" galop heralded by horns and trumpets and played by full orchestra

It's only the finale of the overture that's associated with the Lone Ranger.

Still do to this day when the neighbor's gangster rap gets too loud.

I used to do that with Gregorian chant. Years later I heard Enigma and thought "Oh yeah!"

another blaster...

while I lived in some 2 story barracks the guy below me THOUGHT he had a loud sterio...to get even I would lay my 6 speaker sunn 200watt concert lead amp on the floor face down and blast him into C&W hell.

I DID THAT, TOO! (Eventually I moved away...there is only so many acts of getting even and then one-upping those acts that a person can do without crossing a line that can't be uncrossed, and could lead to incarceration). I still love blasting Wagner in the car during rush hour traffic. That, and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, which I vaguely remember in my very, very young days was used in a commercial to sell breakfast cereal that was "shot from guns." I can't remember the name of the cereal to save my life right now.

I can see that, and it's funny as all hell! I once had a perfect driving moment with Jeff Beck's Freeway Jam from Blow By Blow! So I feel you on that one.

I believe that would be Quaker Puffed Wheats blowin' out them cannons K10! But KaBooms, Rice Krispies and Dinos had cannon commercials too.

I am having 70's flash backs....someone forgot Chico and the Man and Barney Miller....lol

I love the CSI's theme..again, 70's music from THE WHO. Deep Space 9 and Generations from Star Trek hold a special place in my heart. We had a basenji that would yodle to both...his own song for each. Was so cool. He was cool. I miss him.

CSI Miami's "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.... fits perfectly with the show's theme.

Crossroads (Ralph Macchio movie) theme/incidental music by Ry Cooder... bluesy and ballsy... love the 'cutting heads guitar duel with Steve Vai.

Doctor Who theme... in yer face and totally ballsy.

And who could forget "this is Spinal Tap" ..... everything flies there (cos it goes to 11)

As for 'instrumentals... theme to "The Dam Busters" ... dunno who did it but its got grit,
