January 26, 2006...Troll Thumping Day came to WC!

Two years later, it's going strong with more Thumpers than a Troll could count with all his toes.

For those asking what Troll Thumping Day is...here is a brief history.
"TROLL THUMPING

Troll Thumping on the internet is quite easy and has become
quite popular, since most Troll’s have taken to hiding out on the world wide web. However, they still have the means to dwell within stumps that they create
from stray bites of deleted info. (This is where your torch will come in handy,
so that you can ‘smoke’ them out’.)

The object of Troll Thumping is not to ‘kill’ or ‘harm’ the Troll, but to just let him know you are aware of their presence. Truth be known, Troll’s rather enjoy being thumped and some have been known to hang large red flags above their stumps, making it easier for you to find them.

The history of Troll Thumping goes back hundreds of years to the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. It was one of the greatest fires the mountain had ever seen and turned thousands of tree’s into burned out, hollow stumps. Everyone
knows how much Troll’s like the smell of burnt wood (Another reason they
look forward to Troll Thumping Day..as Troll’s are deathly afraid of fire, so they rely on US to give their stumps that ‘new burnt-stump’ smell) so the burnt out stumps became quickly occupied. It didn’t take long before the
Wicklow Mountains were over run with Troll’s, for, as we all know, Troll’s will
only multiply as the stump availability will allow. You better believe that the Troll’s got ‘jiggy’ with it after the fire left some 15,000 stumps in it’s wake.

It was discovered, quite accidentally, that a good ‘thump’ to the noggin would render a male Troll impotent for up to one year. So, the people of Wicklow would gather once a year to go Troll Thumping in order to keep the population down. Why not just ‘kill’ all the Troll’s? Because, as you well know, Troll dung is the best fertilizer there is for a variety of crops, but especially Wild Wicklow Roses.

Today, the wild Troll population is well controlled and protected, and Troll Thumping Day has become more about tradition than anything else. Since many folk cannot get to Wicklow or don’t know where any wild Troll’s live, they have made Troll Thumping on the Internet their way to celebrate the tradition.

What you need to know…
1.You can only thump a Troll on Troll Thumping Day, which is every February First. To thump before or after February First will guarantee you bad luck through out the year.
2.You may only thump a Troll on the brow. Anywhere else will guarantee you bad luck through out the year.

Thumping On The Internet…
This is tricky. The best way to thump a Troll on the internet is in forums. The idea is to bait the Troll to post in a forum..or just lurk in one and hope a Troll shows up. Immediately AFTER the Troll posts, you follow with a resounding thump by posting your club. If your thump does not immediately follow the Troll’s post, it doesn’t count!!!!!

It is after you thump a Troll that then, and only then, are you allowed a Pint of Ale. Drinking BEFORE a thump or after a BAD thump will guarantee you bad luck through out the year.

Troll Thumping FORUMS have been known to pop-up, where a thumper may go to post a link to a good thump, or just hang out with other Thumper's to tell tales and drink Ale.

TROLL THUMPING BEGINS AT ONE MINUTE PAST MIDNIGHT ON JANUARY 31ST AND ENDS EXACTLY AT MIDNIGHT ON FEBRAUARY 1ST!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, it is considered bad form and very bad luck for any one person to thump the same Troll more than once!!! Never do this. Once you have thumped a Troll, go find another one. Give someone else a shot at it.

That’s all you need to know."

I don't know, I meet a troll or two in my life and one of them was really nice!
So I don't think I want to thump any...... maybe they just need a hug!

I could be completely and utterly wrong.....

why Feb 1st??

Good question.
It used to be March 1st, but people quickly got tired of unintentionally pulling out Troll's from stumps on Groundhog Day. Since everyone knows that Trolls sleep for 24 hours after being thumped and their freshly burned stumps allow you to distinguish them from Groundhog stumps, the logical thing to do was to move it to February 1st.

As explained in the info enclosed in the Essential Icon Pack...Trolls actually LIKE to be thumped and it helps control the Troll population. People get confused because they think the Trolls are being 'exterminated', which they are not. Everyone knows that Troll dung makes the best fertilizer for a variety of plants, but especially Wild Wicklow Roses. So, of course, we want to keep them around.

The really sad thing about this is that they melt all their gold (or gold pressed latinum) down for spittoon's and 16 inch wands they use for picking their noses with.
And they really don't understand the value of the gold. It's more like a fascination with 'shiny' things.

Need to add rules here......

1 Never stand between a troll and the spittoon....grown men have been known to be knocked back 15 paces, lesser persons through walls...such is the exit speed and high velocity of the mucus projectile.

2 Stand no closer than 40 paces when 16 inch wand exits trolls nose.....dry cleaning bills have been known to exceeed the $200 mark, just for a jacket and pants....such is the difficulty of troll booger stain removal.

3 On Troll Thumping day, do not hit one in the stomach, guts, breadbasket....results in deafening sound similar to that of a whoopee cushion, with the emanating gas cloud known to have brought tears to grown mens eyes....in some instances, fainting and unconsciousness has been reported.

4 Troll fascination for shiny things extends also to puppies, so leave yours at home on Troll thumping Day....they love to lick, play with and fondle puppies, frequently taking them back to their stumps for extended periods of play.
Don't believe me...just take a look in your local store window at how many 'lost puppies' signs there are...or even in the newspapers in the lost and found column, or even in the personal column 'puppies wanted' because of the shortage created by Troll puppy-nappings.

Happy Troll Thumping Day to all....but be warned, it could turn out to be no picnic if ignoring these basic rules/guidelines

(Thank you, recreation time's over, now back to my padded cell )

Oh here we go a thumping
Across the grass so green
O here we go a thumping
How many trolls have you seen.
Oh here we go a thumping
Just bash them on the head
But lightly cause we really don't want them dead.
Oh here we go a thumping
Please leave your dogs at home
Oh here we go a thumping
Take a friend don't go alone.
Oh here we go a thumping
Just like in days of old
Oh here we go a thumping
Be brave my friends be bold.

This is not about liking or disliking Trolls and would refer anyone who thinks otherwise to the info enclosed in the TTDAY Essential Icon Pack.

be alert friend Dragon, for who knows what species will next be deemed 'harmful'

Troll's will often try to 'befriend' dragons through trickery and manipulation. Again, I would refer you to the info in the afore mentioned Icon Pack...however...I will reiterate that Troll's have a love for the smell of freshly burnt wood, which is why they look forward to Thumping Day and being smoked out of their stumps. Since they are deathly afraid of fire and incapable of overcoming that fear in order to make the fire themselves, they would love nothing better than to have their own personal 'dragon' to char their stumps whenever they desire.
The problem with this, is that it wears the stump out faster and the Troll would soon have the dragon making NEW stumps..hence the onset of a population explosion, as Troll's only multiply (and must multiply) as the stump population allows.

It is known that Thumpers would NEVER thump a dragon. We are well aware that they are but innocent victims in this ancient tradittion.

They think someone is having a barbecue. You are taking unfair advantage of their basic survival instinct...
