Guy suffered second degree burns. The Lithium/Ion battery in his pocket overheated and boom......it lost its mind. Commentator likened it to a small rocket taking off. Friend of mine uses e-ciggies, keeps the spare batteries in a pocket on a backpack. Something about these batteries is not right.

I have heard it happening with other things and not just the e-cig batteries. Those 2 wheel hoverboards for example. I know at one time some cargo airliners would not ship lithium ion batteries because of the potential for fire. Lithium ion batteries are great as long as they do not explode lol. They are what I have with all my cordless tools and never had any burst into flames, YET.

 One cargo plane was severely damaged by exploding Lithium/Ion batteries which led to the ban. The hover boards because they can't handle the load. A person standing on the board adds weight, therefore more work for the battery. But that was only part of it. Charging the batteries caused them to overheat and some hover boards just standing blew up without any load on them. These could be defects that were missed during inspection.

I think for load issues it has to do with the electronics and how they handle the load. There needs to be a safety built in that stops over charging or shuts down the system when overloaded. I know with my tools they are overloaded from time to time and they do not explode. Sounds to me that with those cheap Chinese built hoverbaords that it is just bad engineering.

Uncle Sam is demanding that all hover boards meet the required standards. Apparently some didn't. So far only one company is being called on it.

I bin holding off but I just can't resist.....

Coulda been worse.... could have ended up with a couple o' roasted nuts and a burnt branch..... like from which tha nuts wos hangin'.

Seriously, It's not something I'd wish on anyone.  Burns can be the most painful of injuries, not the mention the worst scarring.  Hopefully the poor guy recovers well and isn't too badly scarred.

On another note, those e-cigarettes are totally useless and a waste of money as a quit smoking device.  Everyone I know who tried it ended up back on the real thing and smoking a lot more.  Thankfully, I wasn't taken in by the hype and managed to quit pretty much cold turkey.... starting into my 10th year smoke free now.

Well I wouldn't say that, I am starting my 5th year of e-cigs and have not reverted to tailor mades (cigs). I do make my own juice and use 0, zero, none, zip nicotine.

None of the 30+ batteries I have has exploded or caught on fire over that time frame. I do have some stick batteries that will not take a charge though.

5th year?  Really?  That's an awful long time to be using a quit smoking product.... well from where I'm stan.... sitting it is.  Had it been me I would have wanted to be off 'em well before that... like after 2 - 3 months or so.  I seriously needed to kick all the actions and behaviours assoctiated with smoking, otherwise I may have wakened and gone back, so no, there were no e-cigarettes for me.

Well e-cigs were marketed here in Oz as a quit smoking device... and not a very successful one at that.  Like is said, everyone I know went back to smoking tobacco products within a month or so.  Thing is, if you feel the benefit and enjoy using an e-cig, then go for it.  The cost is obviously better than the 'real' thing, so you're in front by miles and healthier for it.

e-cigs in North America are market as a healthier smoking alternative to smoking regular cigarettes (not so much as a quit smoking device) and that is done mostly through online commercials and ads. I seldom see them on television. I really don't think e-cig companies care why they are used. I quit smoking cigs 20+ years ago. I am now an occasional pipe smoker which for me is a hobby. I enjoy trying different types of tobacco and collecting pipes.

Not all hover boards were/are the same.  As with ALL electronic devices there are non-compliant versions [read cheap] coming out of China in particular that do NOT pass the [local] electrical standards....particularly with current tolerance with the chargers.

Eg, Oz-compliant ones have a 'tick' symbol and generally state 110 to 250 volt [meaning they will also comply with US standards].

5 will get you 10 the e-cig was an el-cheapo.

All batteries have the potential to 'explode' during charge...particularly unsealed lead-acid - the gasses given off are flammable.

Always look for standards compliance with anything you buy...
