Ok Boss, that's really sad as it's such a loved piece of software.

A very sad state of affairs.  Another disappointment.  Another mystery not to be answered.

Quoting LightStar,

It was never even certified for Windows 8 Andy.

It wasn't, but it was still working kindof slabdash, Now however as I understand it is totally incompatible so now would be the perfect time to update such a popular program.

I am sure that Island Dog, Neil Banfield and others concerned read this post and they're not going to bother to get further into this as long as there is nothing to report, however theyre'not stupid, Of course they talk about this amongst themselves and hopefully we will have something popping up in the forums futurewise if there is enough interest and if it is viable to produce such an extensive update.

This really illustrates the concept of "code rot"... as OS software and machine hardware advance (and they're both doing that quickly) programs seem to 'slow down' and cause more and more problems.

The solution up until now has been to have more and more coders working at keeping programs 'current' and as functional as the OS allows. Small companies find that very hard to do as they have to remain profitable in order to just that.

Now, MIT and Adobe (think - Photoshop the industry gold standard legacy program) are working together to create a new concept..."Helium" which is "self healing/self optimizing" software...nice for the future, but this is here and now.

Back to the real world: Stardock created many apps to address the demand for customization. That demand has fallen off, while paradoxically W10 is far uglier than the usual OS, and to make it more secure, more portions are "hard coded" and not 'accessible' to modification. To find 'work arounds' and 'fix' the software to work with the new OS and new chip architectures, takes time. Had IP been 'fixed' for W7, it wouldn't carry over to W10 (which will continue to be W10, but be periodically updated and 'evolve').

So, to 'fix everything' at this point would require man hours which have to be covered/paid somehow...the gaming side of SD...which also requires manpower/devs/artists/QA, and coordination of all this determines priorities...because customization is declining, the site and software priorities are coming secondary to the gaming side, which more and more supports us.

This is the reality. None of us loves this reality, but there it is. Forbearance and patience are a plus, because really, nothing else will help.

For what it's worth CursorFX is listed as Win10 compatible, I'm using it on Win10 and it seems fine.

As for Windowblinds without iconpackager, well, go without Windowblinds for a couple of weeks and then see how you feel about it

Yup, my sentiment exactly!  Even if the spy capabilities of Win 10 could be 100% disabled, it has the ugliest UI of any MS operating system and will not go on any of my machines in its current state.

I have to agree with B3y0ndRe4lity, there is no point in dressing up the UI with WindowBlinds if you're stuck with butt ugly default Windows icons... it entirely defeats the purpose, and thus a waste of time IMO.  So, until this situation is resolved, and I'm satisfied that the OS can't phone home with MY personal data, there is no way on Earth I'd install Win 10 on a rig of mine.... and if the 'free' period runs out prior to this, and Win 8.1 is no longer supported/viable, then I switch to a version of Linux as my primary OS.  I've been trying out Robolinux, Mint and Ubuntu with some pleasing results and will decide on one when the time comes.

Isn't the issue the same as on Windows8- Iconhandler entry?
Or did the issue evolve even further with new folder locations and such?
I still have high hopes that Iconpackager will return, because it is one of the applications that had the most impact back in the day for wincustomize.
Just remember those GUI Championship back then full of amazing sets- that was the time where skinning came together from all over the globe.
By taking that section away skinning in that matter slowed down.

The revival "could" have an impact on sales of OD aswell. Just saying, even though its not my decision to make.

That reminds me of the Gov. asking for Coders help to create something similar, about 2 years ago they offered 1million reward :3
thank you for the link

Quoting starkers,

there is no point

History has proven, in my little corner of the universe, that if I take the "AllOrNuthin'" approach I have an annoying tendency to end up with "OrNuthin'"    Individual results may of course vary

In my case, the "or Nuthin" is a good thing, as far as Win 10 goes.  I am quite happy with Win 8.1 and see no reason to downgrade.  Besides, I have all my Stardock apps working on Win 8, including IconPackager, so there is no incentive to move to 10.  I see that as a downgrade, and particularly so if I can't customise the entire desktop and swap out the crappy default Windows icons for those of my own choosing.... it'd be like buying a pair of pants without the crotch, LOL.

READ what The Doc said, and the rest of the post for that matter -It makes perfect sense, and Doc didn't say that it won't come.

Quoting neone6,

Hm, what don't you understand?

Um, what I do understand is that the Win 10 UI and icons are too fugly for any desktop of mine, so in the event that Iconpackager is not released prior to the ' get Win 10 free' period, I won't be downgrading to it.  In other words, Win 10 has no allure for me as is, so Stardock needs to get IP out there for it in the next 7 and a bit months or I switch platforms to a Linux based OS and find ways to customise that instead.

Quoting neone6,

Did you read what Doc just explained ???

Yes, I read it.  However,  if Iconpackager isn't compatible by the time Win 10 is no longer 'free', then I shall not bother.  Simply put, there is no way I'd pay for Win 10, and given the lack of development/updates to IP over the last 3 - 4 years or more, I'm just not confident it'll be ready before MS' cut off date.

Apart from the fugly UI and icons, I also have privacy concerns.  Sure, some of the 'phone home' stuff can be turned off via 3rd party apps, but not all and I'd still not be sure Win 10 is safe to use. No, I'd want the modified version the Chinese are demanding and MS is bowing down to... a version that's stripped of all that spy crap but in English.

Hopefully this explains my POV.  Even IF Iconpackager is ready in time, I still have doubts regarding its installation and use.

IP, while a good program and great eye candy back in the XP days, fell far short with the transition to 64 bit and live folders. Such a pity.
