Grabilla might be the one for you…

It gives you:

  • Screenshots with editing capabilities (unfortunately, not blurring).
  • Creating screencasts including voice.
  • Animated GIF creation.

It works on Windows, Mac and Linux as well…and it’s free.

It has a user manual and an options window…with the ability to set hotkeys, where to save or publish. You can capture a defined area (rectangular), a full screen, or a program window, but no codec settings for enhanced quality. You can enter text or add an arrow, rotate the image and highlight part of the capture.

Grabilla’s website displays linkage/embedding options useful for posting on the net.

You might have problems capturing video, though.

The download page offers two choices. One is via the site – and I would advise choosing that way since the second is via c|net’s Download.com. If you choose that option, you should pay careful attention not to get ‘wrapped’ software.

As always, before installing ANYTHING on your computer:

1. Do your own research about the software.

2. Determine your need.

3. Create a restore point in case anything goes wrong during the installation.

4. If you haven’t done a backup within the past week, do one. It’s painless and saves quite a bit of regret.

5. Always choose "Custom" or "Advanced" installation if offered. That will allow you to view whether the software comes in a wrapper with toolbars, home page and search engine switchers or other software/Adware you might not want.

I've been using Gadwin PrintScreen for years.  IMO it's been the best free option out there for Windows, though I couldn't say if it's available for Mac/Linux.

BernieTime, glad you have a program you're happy with, but on looking at the link you provided it would seem that the free version of Grabilla offers many more features.

Unfortunately, they don't list or really give a screenshot of what their fee version does and don't list all its features. In fact, the screenie of their paid ($30) version doesn't really show if it does animations/voice recording although I could be wrong. I only say that because they have other software that has the 'recording' option and it's sold separately.
