I would rather that it be something that you need to check yourself.
Small thing but maybe others agree?
EDIT:
Resolved, Thanks!
What's most annoying is that you have to remember to uncheck it every time you reply.....could the site at least remember your preference for that particular thread?

I'd subscribe...or is it prescribe...to that.
I concur.
Is it just me or has it already been changed to unchecked by default now?
now when you open the thread you are automatically subscribed.
open post, uncheck subscribe, to much trouble. someone email me when it's fixed.
Of course there is the other approach we can all take, don't reply to any threads, someone is bound to figure out there is a problem.
It's just you. No change here.
Just noticed that. I was wondering why up top where it says subscriptions there was a 1 posted there. Now I know why. Uncheck before posting.
It does seem to remember my preference on each thread, now. Perhaps it's a cookie thing....haven't cleared them since I wrote this.
I believe that was resolved a week or so ago. You would need to make sure to logoff, clear cookies, and login again.
Correction: I just tried it out with XP/IE8. On posts I have not replied to before, it is still checkmarked by default.
And about it being autochecked by default?
Nope. Not working.
Yep, still auto-checked on posts on which the user has not replied.
Ok, you have the option to stop that here.
https://forums.wincustomize.com/account/options
Under the options tab, just unselect "Auto subscribe to new posts and replies you create".
I've just done that - though you shouldn't have to, it shouldn't be on by default.
I've also unticked 'subscribe to this post' as well, just to be sure. Let's see what happens
Thanks a lot, Spencer!
I'm happy now.
Apparently this problem has come back again. I have been told that it was never "fixed" permanently , so I must have been imagining the last year and a half........time to check myself into the loony bin along with a whole lot of other people that have the same disillusion as me.
2of3 remembers to uncheck the box this time so he isn't auto subscribed to this thread.......
It is not fixed, the box is still checked and I do not have that option checked. I have also logged off, clear cookies and logged back in again. The box forcing a subscribe is still checked.
Correct. It WAS fixed, however after I wrote this in 2013. I bumped the thread as a reminder.
