If your Windows 8 doesn’t detect installed firewall/Antivirus, here’s how to fix that.

While Windows 8 isn’t for me, many folks have gone the way of getting the new OS.

Because all OS’s are vulnerable (W8, too), and because of the recent fall from grace and decertification of MSE by AV-Test you should have security software installed.

While cruising the net, I found an article on The Windows Club which deals with the problem of W8 not detecting installed security software. This is not your fault. You can run  sfc /scannow to your heart’s content, but it won’t help.

The problem is with wmiutils.dll . You have to re-register it.

How to:

  • Press Win + X
  • Click on “Command Prompt (Admin)
  • regsvr32 /u WMIUTILS.DLL
  • Reboot the System
  • regsvr32 WMIUTILS.DLL

After rebooting, go to the Action Center. It will report your security software correctly.

If you’re having the same problem in Windows 7, there’s a hotfix:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2482947

Also, for Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/952923

And don't forget to dump the Toys R Us Lego UI and install Start8.

Thanks for the heads up, Doc, I was wondering about a fix for that... now I have one.

Quoting Wizard1956,
or better yet,. just dump the Toys R Us Lego UI and install Windows 7

Thing is, Wiz, I had the same issue in Win 7, it didn't read that I had Avast installed until MS implemented a fix... but it took 'em a while.

Besides, underneath that Toys R Us Lego UI, there's a Win 7ish desktop that does all the same stuff only faster.  Admittedly, it needs some serious love from Stardock to make it more pleasing on the eye {WB and the like] but on the whole it is a rock solid OS that more than adequately serves my needs.

As for the Lego UI, Stardock has given it some attention and it looks much better.  Hopefully, Stardock will hear my plea and make the tiles more customisable as well... as that IS an area that NEEDS attention if Metro is going to win over those who care about their desktop appearance.  I can't see Metro bothering anyone who liked/likes default XP, they look so similar, but for anyone with an eye for something more aesthetically pleasing, it needs Stardock love.  I have made some adjustments using Stardock software to help make Metro meet my idea of what it should look like, but I am limited to what Decor8 can do thus far, and as yet that doesn't include tile manipulation/customisation.

Having said that, I am finding Metro to be quite a useful tool for navigating to the various things I want, though I think it could be made even more useful if similar items could be put into categories and there was a 'jump to' ability to go straight to the desired category/grouping.  Hopefully somebody at Stardock is listening [in this case, reading] and will consider this and the customisabe tile options.

Sorry about the hijack, Doc, but it just rolled off after seeing Wiz's "Lego UI" comment.  He's right, Metro isn't the most pleasant thing to view after being accustomed to the abilities of WB, IP, CFX and the like, so I know you'll forgive me.

Thanks Doc for the effort. Been trying to fix this with Avast on Win 7 forever and a day. I requested and got the HotFix but it did not fix the problem so notifications for AntiVirus shall remain turned off!

So what you're trying to say is that I hang out in some dubious places?

Like you yanked the chain... then waited to see if I was what flushed out?

Oh, and Wiz, my litte rant... er explanation of Win 8, had little to do with what you said and more to do with what needs fixing to make it look more pleasant.  Your comment, then, was not the cause but more the trigger of something that's needed saying about Win 8 for a while now.  I just hope that the people who matter notice it and do something positive.

Hehe, fantastic clip there, Doc, laughed all the way through.

I guess SFC has changed in later versions of Microsoft. When I was playing with it, it ONLY scanned Windows system files, not 3rd party vendors.
