No… not the future prediction. The hand’s motions controlling the computer.

It’s here. It’s on pre-order. It’s so cool.

So what is “The Leap”? According to its developer:

“The Leap is a small iPod sized USB peripheral that creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet to precisely interact with and control software on your laptop or desktop computer.”

You can read more about it here: http://live.leapmotion.com/about.html

It’s so expensive, though. $69.99 (why do they do that: Is anyone fooled?).

The vid pretty much says it all. The size?

Okay that's bitchin'. But does it require special stuff to interact with programs? That is to say, does it simply hook into the native mouse drivers of windows, or will each program need to be "supported"?

Could I be reading too much into this or is this the one piece of hardware that might change some folks feelings about Windows 8?

That "one piece of equipment"

would be the Doom Hammer:

Yeah I had a look, but that's a bit vague for my taste. Especially with the mention of their own software needing to be installed.

@ $69.95 it might be fun to try out.  If nothing else, it will keep my CueCat company on the shelf-of-abandoned-tech.

Your mouse has drivers. Their software is probably something similar.

You're not gonna pass on this. A 3D space to create in and play in ??? Wahoo!

The chopsticks bit is what I find most interesting.  I'm very curious how well it works in real life.

No way in hell you can do the same things with that... that I can do with a mouse.

It's just not as precise... and the obvious latency is horrible.

The average person, even for non-precise handling of app controls is not going to be as hand\eye coordinated as this guy doing the demo.

Plenty of gimmickry mongers will check it out for 70 bucks tho..

My guess, is at least this early version of this type of tech. is nowhere near where it needs to be, for widespread use.

Off to the shelf with Zubatti's CueCat

I am very proficient with chopsticks in real life, thank you very much.  There's a traditional ramen noodle joint around here that is absolutely fantastic.  Man, now I'm hungry...

Oh man, anything traditional and oriental is nearly 300 miles from me (the Republic in Portland is one) When I was younger I thought that eating with chopsticks was a great way to diet... Now I can eat with chopsticks and not think about it AND talk about dieting.
