Can't log in to Impulse...

By Posted July 13, 2008 10:46:29
I just downloaded Impulse from the Impulse site, installed it, have the dock on the bottom of my screen, but
something isn't right... It doesn't seem to be of any use! When I click on the Impulse icon I'm supposed to log
in with my existing Stardock login and I get the message "Server not responding - check internet connection".
Well, I am on the internet with my firewall turned off. I can't get it to send me my login info (which I already
know) because it won't recognize my email address. I can click on the Community tab and log right in to that
with my Stardock login info... what's up with that?

When I go into the community site and look at my registrations all I see is Object Desktop and Stardock Central.
Isn't there supposed to be a listing of what I have installed on my computer along with updates that are
available?

What is supposed to be in the other tabs (Desktop, tools, etc.)? Mine are all empty and I can't see any way to
put anything in them - I don't even have any idea why I'd want to put anything in them...

I know that this thing (Impulse) is supposed to do a lot of stuff but... what am I missing? It seems totally useless
right now! I'd just as soon delete the whole thing and just keep using Stardock Central.

Sorry this is so long, just trying to inform. I've been reading for hours in the forums and can't find any answers.

Can anyone help?

Off hand, I dunno. But see if reinstalling helps.

I tried the uninstall and reinstall and get the same results...

Did you install this version? http://www.impulsedriven.com/impulse_setup_full.exe?

Click on the Question mark in the upper right and then Network Diagnostics.  Post the results here.

OK, I downloaded twice and still get the same message: server not responding. I try everything I can to log on and it won't recognize me. I try to get my logon info sent to my email and it won't recognize me.
The only difference is I don't have the dock on my screen now.

Thanks for trying to help but I'm not going to spend a week of my time on this. Is Stardock going to discontinue Stardock Central? If not, I'll just stick with that.

Windows XP SP2 (Windows firewall off), Norton Internet Security 2008 (tried with firewall on and
off), Firefox 3.0...

Do you think I should contact Stardock Support?
July 14, 2008 08:20:26
I would recommend disable Norton Internet Security completely. And reset the Windows XP Firewall afterwards.

Hi ThackeryBagworm,

Something doesn't make sense here.  You are stating that you cannot logon due to the server not responding message.  But then you are able to view the community pages and etc.  However, you shouldn't have ever been able to get into Impulse without having first logged in successfully at least once.  Had  you logged on previously at one time but are now unable too?

Also, are you behind a Proxy server?  If so that may be the reason for not being able to connect to the server.  If you are behind a proxy please click on the Orb in the upper left corner and choose preferences.  Then click on Connection and enter your Proxy settings and click OK to save your changes.  After entering your proxy settings restart Impulse and hopefully you should be able to logon now.

Also, as MindTooth suggested, as a test you may want to consider temporarily disabling Norton Internet Security to see if it is prevent Impulse from communicating with our servers.

If you are at the Logon Screen, click on the Edit Proxy Settings link near the bottom of the window.

If you already have Impulse open, Click on the Orb in the upper left corner and choose preferences.  Then click on Connection and enter your Proxy settings and click OK to save your changes.  After entering your proxy settings restart Impulse and hopefully you should be able to logon now.

Hey T-Man,

First off, I tried disabling Norton and got the same results. Not sure what a proxy server is but I'm just at my home computer.

Something doesn't make sense here. You are stating that you cannot logon due to the server not responding message. But then you are able to view the community pages and etc.

As for Impulse: on the Impulse dock, the first 3 docks are Community, Store and Impulse. When I click the first two I'm just already logged in to those areas with my usual Stardock/Wincustomize username. When I click on Impulse I'm supposed to log in. That's when I get the "server not responding" message. I thought it was weird too but maybe I don't even need to use the Impulse shortcut, but why's it there... ?

See, I don't really know how to use Impulse. It's supposed to keep track of all my Stardock programs and let me know what needs updating - like SDC right? When I go into the community site and look at my registrations all I see is Object Desktop and Stardock Central.
Isn't there supposed to be a listing of what I have installed on my computer along with updates that are available?

I feel kinda dumb... but hey I'm pretty new to all this! Thanks for your help!

The registration list is accessed by the third icon in the upper right (next to the globe with a lock).

@ ThackeryBagworm are you sure you are using your stardock.net password to login? Do you know how to check that in Stardock Central and Impulse to make sure they are the same?
July 16, 2008 04:33:17

Hi T-Man, here is the 'net connection diagnosis' error message that i get when i try to log in.

Thanks, Gerry

Yep, same password - I checked with SDC.

gerry 58, I'm seeing two issues.

1) It appears you are unable to access http://dl1.impulsedriven.com

2) The Bits download service is failing.

Because of the error "Necessaria autenticazione proxy." it does appear that you are behind a Proxy and that you system requires Proxy authentication.  Both of the above errors are probably a result of the proxy issue.  If you haven't done so already please configure the proxy settings as mentioned above.

July 16, 2008 09:03:06

ThackeryBagworm,

With the Community and Store links you are just accessing websites at the moment.  Because of the logon problem you are expriencing you haven't actually made it into the Impulse application yet.

First if you will, please check some settings for me in Internet Explorer.  Please select Tools->Internet Options.  On the Internet Options dialog click on the Connections Tab and then the LAN Settings button.  What settings are checked/enabled on this page if any?  This may help me determine if you are behind a proxy server or not.

Also, if you navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary, if there is an impulse-errorlog.txt file can you please email me the contents of that file.  pford @ stardock.com
This may provide an extra clue as to what is causing the problem.

hmmm.  Seems like Dial-up is the common factor here.  Not sure why that is a problem yet.

OzLandTripp,

Out of curiosity, have you tried using the new download mechanism suggested here ?

July 25, 2008 15:06:32
yes and I still get nowhere
