Firefox 3 Release & Stardock Site Compatibility
Jul 30, 2008 12:59

Firefox 3.0 goes final and is scheduled for release on Tuesday, June 17th.

There are currently known incompatibilities between Firefox 3 and many of our sites and forums. For the most part, the sites function properly, but have formatting issues. A specific example are the login & password fields to log into these forums. In Firefox 3, instead of both being on the same line, they are stacked vertically.

We will be addressing these visual issues in time. Please do NOT post threads on the forums pointing out Firefox 3 site issues. They will be deleted. We are aware of the problems and will work as quickly as we can to resolve them.

Until posted otherwise, the only version of Firefox our sites support at the moment is Firefox 2.

Impulse, is adware

By Posted May 4, 2008 20:01:29

First it seems to be a piece of adware.  I don't mean to say adware as in installing parasitic software or some sort of spyware what I mean is the general definition of adware.  Generically, adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running.  Impulse seems to be a Point of sale more then a functional app.  I mean the first thing you see when you open up the application is advertisements for Stardock applications. Yes I know I am on the store tab, but must this be the first thing I see when I open it up?  I am sorry but as a longtime subscriber and purchaser of Stardock applications, I really don't want to see ads on my desktop.  Being on the Internet with my browser open is one thing but do I really have to be bothered by ads when opening a piece of purchased software?  I would expect to see this on some second rate spyware company ad but not from Stardock.  Especially advertisements on software of which I already own.  Now I understand this is usually done so that outside advertisement cost are kept low thus assist in keeping the overall cost of the software low.  But again I expect this from a third rate software company, certainly not from Stardock.

I am also seeing this in MyColors as well.  Using the application to replace Theme Manager to advertise themes is ridiculous.  I am disappointed in seeing this.  Having my browser open is one thing but when the door is closed. It's equivalent to garbage junk-mail I get in box or the spam crap I get in my e-mail.

I already purchased subscriptions to your software and I have renewed many times since then.  I have bought themes and subscribed to Wincustomize and renewed many time as well. Is it necessary to keep trying to sell to me.

Actually I think it is very nice of Stardock to present use with such software. These people work hard with long hours to make these programs. Which by all means I fully intend to pay for and test at any given length. I've been around here for a few years and it has been a really interesting experience to see the new programs from Stardock.
Some people do not enjoy working with computers. I do and have a lot of fun with it. Even though I have had my ups and downs. I still try to keep with what is the best for customizing my windows. People need to understand one thing. If there is something you do not like. Then do not use it!
If you are ready and willing to give a real project of doing things with windows a try. Then by all means use the products. Even if it is a beta or alpha... that will soon change to where it is a full release. But by testing and using the beginning of the software. I get a fuller understanding of how it is going to work in the final release. That along with input for making what I hope it to be also.

There is no adware in Stardock products. That is a very foul thing to say. Stardock makes some of the best software there is on the market today anywhere. The reason you feel the way you do about it being related to adware is sad. Then you should look at all the other major software companies out there too. I would be willing to bet you think they are as you think to be adware also. Truely they are not at all. Everyone has to market the programs for something to get what they need for more research.
Research is an on going process with every software company. They all have to keep up with the market of new tech. and the people that are using it.

We need to get a grip on the real truth behind it all. Being that a lot of things are marketed today. Which is never completely ready for every user; but is for some. Once all the bugs are worked out as some see it. There is always going to be someone else who has something different. Which has to be worked with and fixed for them to use it correctly.

Give it a chance and see what it can really do for you. If you do not like it? Then do not use it.
Simple as that...

Good post Goo... It is good to bring to light the differences between Smart advertising and forced adware. One is offered as a selling point while maintaining a Benefit to the customer by offering ease of shopping. The other is intended to flood you with unwanted and sometimes difficult to remove ads they get paid to cram in your face.

Now they just need to add/let me use Roboform in it so I can get to the forums with ease.

I know it is a little off topic.

A few years back When I first became interested in ODT, window blinds in particular, I started visiting the forums hoping to learn from the pros on how to build my own skins. After witnessing the treatment of the occassional newby, who dared ask what some considered to be a foolish question.Condenscending and sarcastic answers would be putting it mildly. Within the last year , I read an article some where that stated that sort of thing was not tolerated any more. I figured hey I'll go to the forums, see if there is anything interesting to read about. Well from what I see those hard working pros are finally getting paid for all their hard work. I think that is great. If you have the experience and knowledge to build a premium skin, power to you. I've noticed that theme manager seems to be on the way out, having only 7 new Themes displayed since Oct. 2006,only two of those were premium themes.Yea, I know, it's only supposition. I will wait to see what the future brings. Most of us are willing to pay for MyColors. In fact I was contemplating giving them as christmas gifts. We all spend more than twenty dollars for one present. But when newby's to MyColors, have questions and concerns regarding the interface or download manager, lol. We are just looking for answers, not articles that imply " Let me tell the whiners a truth about life: Money is exchanged for goods and services." All I have to say is --Merry Christmas.
I don't speak for anyone else. this is just one person's perspective.Mycolors seems to be the wave of the future If you've never used it, you ask questions, that is what the forums are for, isn't it?

I was under the mistaken impression , that Stardock Central was being replaced by Impulse. If it is no thing but a download manager, once SDC is phased out I guess the only way to get access to my software on line would be through this download manager, which seems to me makes it a feature( if I have to use it)

Stardock also gives direct links to the software... neither is needed to download it... Just bought software today... for my wife's computer... and installed without the use of Impulse, or SDC...

???

I just do not understand this thread.
Impulse is like Steam, the place you buy stuffs and manage them. Nothing is wrong here.
May 22, 2008 09:07:44
The original poster was upset about the store tab.
May 22, 2008 16:09:09
Wow... an integrated store / community / download manager actually has ... *drum roll* A STORE section... PERISH THE THOUGHT!

The day Impulse pops up an ad I would get rid of it as ad ware (well... steam pops up ads, but you can turn it off in the settings... insulting, but not deal breaker). Until then, it is a wonderful piece of software doing exactly what it was meant to... integrating all stardock games into a single app that allows me to install/upgrade my purchased games, get support in the community, and buy new ones with my tokens.

PS. aluminum foil hats actually act as antenna, increasing radio reception. You should make a Faraday cage or just wear a lead helmet (make sure the lead is properly sealed to prevent brain damaging lead poisoning, you can't afford to become MORE paranoid)
May 22, 2008 17:19:21
By the original posters logic then iTunes is also ADWARE.
That evil s/w not only has a STORE link, hell it even has the option for a MINI-STORE on my Library!!! How dare they!

Wait wait wait.. omg.. when i load IE7 it takes me to this MSN page where my god, there are ADs!! OMG there are even links to BUY THINGS!!! who do they think they are...

My lord people, do you want people to stop making ALL software? Or do you think the world OWEs you FREE software? Either way, this is just ridicules.

May 23, 2008 11:45:41
well, this goes beyond owing you free software, he doesnt want any type of store to exist, bnut how can we buy things without a store?
You know what else has a store? walmart.com
Yes, the entire walmart.com website is one big advertisement...

And The Welcome Center Page that opens on HP's Windows Vista, has 21 links to Microsoft, Symantec,Games etc. it also has an option to run at start up. Some people like having things and ideas right there, some don't. It's nice to have a choice, if You want it. most company's don't give you the choice. I am happy with Stardock, but,Microsoft could be another story.
May 28, 2008 23:43:02

Just so that a few people are aware from time to time Stardock software does get attacked by random security software for being malware, adware, or whatever. Object Dock weather gadgets were attacked by anti virus for using scripts in the weather gadget to access the internet for example.

Impulse loads nothing with out permission (save for it's own updates of course) and does not contain any of the malware or adaware garbage. It does load/install software (access and sometimes adjust in the coveted System 32 file) and access the internet though, and in some cases this makes security software jumpy. Most times we contact those companies and work with them to clear the issue. I felt this was still worth mentioning if in the more literal sense of the meaning instead of the original argument.

I just wanted to get that said and out of the way before someone takes this down the other path more than I have right now. Really I only think of it because we get plenty of emails about it of late.

If I pay for something it should work, I should not have to beta test it or put up with things i do not want,Everything I have ever seen of yours Has been the best. But if i am paying for something and it has features I don't want the answer is simple i just won't resubscribe, No Whinning, it's just business, I guess. I have loved the products, skins, ideas and imaginations of all those who have come and gone, I only wish that those with the knowledge would occasionally listen to the rest. If a product doesn't adhear to what I want or expect the choice is simple,....I won't buy it the next time around.Impulse isn't a feature or a product. It's a download manager for getting to products. Well Ive paid for software I do not seem to have access to via Impulse.I have an email, with the reg codes to all Stardock software Ive purchased. However, When Im told by that email to use impulse and input reg codes, I do to no avail. Impulse will NOT let me have my software. I have sent an email to Stardock support, as well as made out a so called Help Ticket...both to no avail.I want my software...Stardock...11 days is more than enought to fix this problem, or tell me what I am doing wrong. No Stardock input in that time is simply NOT acceptable.Someone please help me with this crazy crap!Xythe

Ok I am not sure if you gotten the problem solved or not but just in case you didn't:
I have noticed to get the registration codes all you have to do is sign in and click on settings --> Registratons and right there the codes well be there thus letting u redownload and re-register the programs.

And the store tab is similar in one respect. If you don't want to see it,don't open it.In the words of Judge Judy "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining"
May 29, 2008 11:09:15
it's always something
May 29, 2008 14:00:55
Oh no! I left it on the store tab, and Impulse opened with a colorful, attractive, nicely presented page filled with products I either use, wish I could afford,or may be interested in someday. It was horrible!!!
May 29, 2008 19:59:53
Well just to let you all know.. I was corrected somewhere back there. lol and I agree with it all. I have mixed feelings about it all.

one I agree with the fact thats some advertising must be done and is all around us whether we like it or not. I was wrong to assume that advertising should be removed from my sight. When I buy a car i no longer want to see advertisements for the car i just bought but I am wrong to assume that there will not be any. The fact that i open the door and see Honda embroidered on my car seats, The Honda emblem on my steering wheel, the emblem on the Jensen stereo system and that just me getting in my car. I have the Sceptre name on my monitor, the Logitech symbol on my mouse and keyboard, the Direct TV emblem on my remote, the Staples emblem on my stapler, the yellow pages emblem on my phone book. I am bombarded my ads everyday and got worked up over nothing.

For all those with replies that were constructive, I appreciate and for those that posted just to be a smart-ass i hope you got you entertainment value.

in addition you must understand I have been around here for a long time and I have seen this community grow from the few people 8 years ago to what it has become today. years ago you did not see advertisement because the "community" was very close knit. There was a post awhile back regarding this being a community and I have also made post/comments on other sites regarding the concept of "community" and peoples ideas of it
(been spending to much time studying Sociology, (possible second major)).

Unfortunately the community concept for this so called community has changed into a large community with smaller communities within and with one very elite community inside of it all that consists of the older and regular participants. For reason you may not understand, I sad to see this community change from what it was to what it has changed into and will be changing into. Yes it's a good thing but for all of us who have bee around since it started you will understand what it is I am saying. The advertisements are just a sign of just how large this has become. Both good and bad.

The advertisements show how large Stardock has become and the sad but true thing is when corporations get big the average Joe will get lost in the mix. regardless of what you think or want the average Joe gets lost because the gap between the average Joe and developer gets bigger and bigger.

Anyways I hope we have this all straightened out.

For those of you seeing this in reply #38. This is actually a combination of 3 various replys combined to make one awfully confusing statement.

Taken out of context it looks like one big rant instead of three differing opinions, LOL

Hello, I am new to Impulse. I first used WindowBlinds several years ago, and having had a wonderful experience with Stardock, I purchased Object Desktop Ultimate. I have not been able to get it work properly. I am new, but not an idiot so spare me snarky remarks. I sent support an email to get help. I received an answer telling me to use Impulse to install my product which I have on a CD. The problem was that I couldn't get impulse to work, ergo, how can I install using it? After reading some of the above posts I am now of the opinion that whatever partnership Stardock has with Impulse, I question why you need to go through a separate party to register my own stuff, get help with it, etc.

I'm beginning to regret purchasing this and getting involved with these companies...

Actually, there are two tabs that I regard as adware... The Store tab and the News icon under the Community tab.  And then theres the strange appearance of the nVidia icon under that same tab.  What's that all about?

I have Impulse on my machine right now only because I need it to download already purchased software and their most current updates.  Other than that, I wouldn't have it on my machine, period!  That adware requires a significant outlay in my dialup bandwidth. Each time I log in with Impulse, the program frequently slows to a crawl and even freezes completely for periods of time. All that content it downloads each time I sign in is a monumental waste of my time. All I want to do is get the latest program updates.  That's it!  I already own all the products from Stardock that I can afford to buy, and even if I had money to throw away, I'm not really interested in any of their other offerings.  Further, your forums are better accessed directly from a standard browser than the erzatz one you have erected around IE.  You have simply added another layer of complexity and bloated code on top of another load of the same from MS.  This is not efficient!

I would favor splitting the Community and store tabs out into Their own application completely separate from the download and and update functions.  Stardock... I want to make it clear to you that if Impulse continues on this path, I will not be resubscribing when my subscription runs out.

Since I really don't think you're going to listen to me, I would like to know how I can get standalone versions of all the software that I have purchased through my Object Desktop Subscription.

Stardock wrote Impulse to replace Stardock Central, their long-time digital distribution manager.

I'd start a new post with your specific Impulse error so we can all try to assist.
Screenshots might help.

Exactly, Impulse was built by stardock as a one stop software distribution portal. Meant to make the managing of your pruchased products easy and reliable.

Thanks HG for your understanding about my post. By the way I wasn't upset when I posted this, I just wanted to prove a point, nothing more nothing less.

I realized your post was more of a debate starter than a flame fest. Yes it would be cool to remove the badging from things at times. tv screens, monitors, cars, etc, at times. But not only do these badges offer advertising to the companies, but also allow you to besure you are typically getting what you ask for. I buy a house it comes with a frigidair deep frezzer, I move in and wala the frigidair is replaced with a much cheaper deep freezer.I will notice this easily by the badge on the freezer.

with the way cars are now if all of them had the badguing removed, it would be harder for police to track them. what kind of car was it ? ..um.. red ?...

some times badges/ads are a necessary evil. I would rather see a few ads within stardocks impulse bringing in new customers and revenues, than try to pay for all this with higher prices on the products.. or see SD crumble from a lack of funding..

Still all in all a good debate Goo

I dislike adware/uninvited adverts with a passion, and yet I do not see Impulse's store tab as being adware. Rather, I see it as an access/information platform to Stardock specific products... nothing wrong with that at all.

Now if Impulse were in my face with popups, uninvited ads for unrelated stuff I have no interest in, well then I'd be pretty pissed, but that's not happening and I personally can't see a problem with Impulse having a store tab that updates/informs me of Stardock product options. I mean, c'mon, why are any of us here, if not for Stardock's products, the related skins, games and pertinent news items, etc... and isn't that what Impulse is all about, giving us the heads up/keeping us abreast of what's available/new, etc.

Now you'll have to excuse me... gotta let the dogs loose...looks like somebody's considering putting junk mail in my letterbox.
