Question

By Posted May 1, 2008 13:37:25
I have two recent things posted and before I updated them they both had 5 stars and when they came back they both had four stars. Why is this?  Is there a penalty for updating things that I don't know about. And before you say anything nobody rated them down they just reappeared with 4 stars..http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=3917&libid=31 & http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=1343&libid=34.. Anybody have any input on why this happened? By the way they,ve both had 5 stars pretty much from the start... All I can think of is one of the mods has a problem with me..

Hmmmmmm!! Very odd Rich. I would not think that a repected mod would mark down your work after it's been updated and I suspect it's a glitch in the system. Hopefully Zu or one of the other mods will be along shortly and clear this nonesense up for you and restore the five star ratings

When I view them, they are at 5 stars.

How can you tell?
Also, a moderator could have rated it when it went through moderation.

Zubaz--I just know..Mods here kind of suck anyway..
If that's the case I guess I'll never be updating anything again..

Zubaz--If your one of them, sorry but it's true...

Numbers used as weapons? Only if you put too much stock in them. Your work speaks for itself Richard. You know if your work is good or not, everything else is just frosting. I can't imagine a mod here at WC having personal vendettas or using their "power" to alienate anyone. If such be the case then they should not be moderating submissions.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I ever see any of your stuff in the queue....

I thought at Journeyman level, your submissions are no longer moderated and automatically post.
If this is the case, they should not have been moderated when they were updated.
How can you blame the lower rating on a moderator in this case?
May 1, 2008 15:16:21

I actually looked at the ratings record for both items Richard.  Here's what happened:

You have a 5/5 score when you updated.  After you updated, additional ratings were made that weren't 5/5, this lowered the averaged score to 4/5.  This could have happened even if you didn't update as they're user ratings records.  These additional ratings could have come from anyone at any time, updated or not.

The only time moderation provides a rating is the first time a skin is rated.  And that's just because our rating is the first one.  If we give something a 4/5 as the first rating, it's a 4/5 until additional ratings are made and they're re-averaged.

Don't get me wrong they are probably really nice guys but their opinions or critiques about skins are really way off..

I'm quite aware of that, but your level doesn't cut it when you're updateing. Still goes into modding.

Richard Mohler-- Sorry if you can't handle others opinions - if these doesn't match your opinion.

Rich........I would think Zoomba's post should be sufficient explanation. I should think all the Mods and others on this site will take exception to your remarks about the Mods. You are one of the most outstanding artists in the customization world and you and your work has a huge following and respect from many of us - please don't spoil it over a minor issue like this. The Mods do a very difficult UNPAID job and spend a lot of their time keeping this place in order and for someone, of your stature, to turn round and tell them that they 'suck' is just not right. There are plenty of 'Yes' men around this site and I am certainly NOT one of them but you need to put this right and apologize.

Maybe you're having a bad day or just got outta bed the wrong side but this is not the Rich we know and love.

I've been here 6yrs and I would guess I've rated maybe 20 skins. The Rating system is a waste of time in my opinion. I think the amount of downloads is more important. I think when you update a skin the downloads and the ratings should be reset because the skin has been changed.

Richard I have a folder with your name on it. Don't get upset over your ratings.
May 1, 2008 18:16:50

The Rating system is a waste of time in my opinion

I wouldn't say it's 'a waste of time' - if used properly.
Some use the ratings to rate the artist (friend) more than the actual upload.

Some artists are able to make a dump at a piece of paper, scan it and upload - and it would get a 5 star rating.....
(that is not the correct way to use the ratings)

If not used, people nag about it (why haven't anyone rated my upload?!)
If used, people nag about that too (why are my rateing so low?!)

think when you update a skin the downloads and the ratings should be reset

I partly agree. Ratings should/could be reset, not downloads.
Just a personal opinion.

if used properly

I agree

If not used, people nag about it (why haven't anyone rated my upload?!)
If used, people nag about that too (why are my rating so low?!)

I have seen a lot of harsh arguments about this subject and because Richard received a 4 instead of a 5 star rating he cleaned out his gallery.

As for the downloads, example: If someone creates a skin and receives 5000 downloads then updates it. The same people deletes the skin and downloads it again that makes 10,000, but the same 5000 people are downloading it.

You're right, ALMonty. Rich has cleaned out his gallery and left. Sad, sad sad day for Wincustomize
May 1, 2008 18:49:50
Shakes head.

The ratings on the skin were very good, I don't understand the fits people have when they drop just a tad, and then remove all their works.  In all my years here I have rarely looked at the ratings on my skins.....because I don't care.  If people like my stuff.....fantastic.  If they don't.....well then.....
