I created a new dock ...

but the spacers are acting oddly

By Posted March 28, 2008 15:42:26

Now, this may only be true on my screen because of the configuration, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone had seen this before.  I've got four screens, and I'm seeing some odd behavior.

I just made a new dock ... works on all sides of the screen just fine.  The spacers are another issue altogether, however.  The top and bottom screen spacers work great.  The right and left spacers work properly, but only on the main screen.  If I try to add a spacer to a side dock on any other screen, while the dock shows up on the correct screen ... the spacer, and ONLY the spacer, shows up on the main screen ... whether there is a dock there or not.

So, if I add a side dock to screen 3 ... dock and icons are all on screen 3 and working great.  But on screen 2 (my main screen) the spacers are just stuck to the sides of that screen ... and there is no dock there.

The odd thing is that I based this dock on the same ini file as my steel dock, and the spacers behave quite normally for all configurations with that dock (at least as far as I can tell).

So ... I'm a teensy bit confused.  Has anyone ever run across this??

Text is a poor communicator of tone.  Smileys help . . but still fall short.

It's often best to assume the best.

Glad to hear you are over it, messiah1. It was a good suggestion. As mentioned, the system just decided to try and make me a crazy person yesterday. Plain and simple.

There is nothing worse than trying to upload a rather small - and very complressed - jpg, and having the system tell you (over and over) that it is not a jpg. Long about the fourth time, one can find ones self screaming obscenities at the computer screen. Which does no good at all.

Combine that with having to (1) repair the garbage disposal, (2) change out several electrical outlets, (3) clean up more cat crap than most people see in a year, and (4) clean up all the storm damage around the house ... and one failed upload can send me over the edge.

Eeesh.

I agree. When it happened to me, I was screaming at the pc (how dumb is that) that IT IS A FREAKING JPG!

Zubaz just tries to be moderate

Nope. I'm a Buddhist. Not allowed. Besides, they are almost all either (1) elderly or (2) handicapped in some way ... so it wouldn't be a fair fight.

Oh ... and the dock actually got posted today!!! I guess the first one was rejected because there were no author's comments ... although what it said was it violated the guidelines in some way. I don't see how that could be possible since the same thing was posted with the second post and it didn't violate the guidelines.

And, having now read the guidelines, it seems a little odd to specifically say that no Bryce postings are allowed unless you can't tell they were done in Bryce. Wouldn't the same have to be true of Cinema 4D or any other 3D rendering application?? If somehow you can tell it was rendered in that application??

I really think someone needs to reconsider the wording of that guideline. I use Bryce a lot, and I sometimes use textures that are peculiar to Bryce. If I see that texture in another wallpaper, I can pretty much tell it was rendered in Bryce. So, I would assume that would mean that the image, no matter how good it is, would be in violation of the guidelines ... since, after all, I can tell it was done with Bryce by just looking at it.

Now, I'm an attorney, so I tend to read things a little differently than most people, but with guidelines such as these, I do think they should say what they mean ... and mean what they say. The brown metal texture I used in Post Apocolyptic Kitty is a dead give away that it was done in Bryce.

Let me quote:

A few examples of what will never get through moderation:
- Britney Spears or other celebrity wallpapers (see note about copyright above)
- Bryce art, unless the result is so astonishing that one could never tell it was done in Bryce.
- Dolphins, palm trees, metal spheres or other over-used elements
- XP-related walls, unless really innovative/original.
- Copyrighted photos/images
- Confused composition...e.g....3D artwork with conflicting light-sources belying the form.
- A ground-swell of negativity from a significant number of admins.

OK .... so Post Apocolyptic Kitty is Bryce art. I like it, but it is in no way "astonishing." I think it is at least as good as other stuff I've seen in the main gallery, but anyone familiar with Bryce would look at that one texture and say "Oh, you used the Copper Bump" there .... nice." Same thing is true of my Steel Dock icons ... any Brycer could probably spot that they were rendered in Bryce.

So, I guess really that the moderators should pull all of my artwork out of the main gallery and just leave it on my personal gallery. Sort of sucks that one particular artist's tool should be singled out as being something that "will never get through moderation."

But, hey, I've been Brycing for .... well, for a long time ... and I'm not about to give up the tool just because the moderators have a bias against it. So ... I suppose you'll need to remove what I've posted so far, and I'll just post to my personal page in the future. Can I assume that they will allow me to post my Bryce renders there? Hope hope.

For a very long time the criteria in that list were used ad nauseum and the list is a bit (well . . .  more than a bit) tongue-in-cheek.  you are fine.

OK, Zubaz, if you say so. But I have to warn you guys, I really love Bryce and will use it until the cows come home and die of old age.

Personally, I think the bias stems from the fact that it's (1) inexpensive and (2) easy to use, which means that it is easy for people with zero talent to create pure crap in 3D with little or no effort.

Having said that, I still think someone should take a few seconds and rewrite those "guidelines" so that they aren't bashing those of us who put some time and effort into our submissions (even if we -- well, I -- still come under the zero talent category).

Also .... as long as I have your attention ... even though this has less than nothing to do with docks and more to do with wallpapers ... I made some multiscreen versions of PAK (the abbreviation I will use forevermore because I am dog tired of typing "Post Apocolyptic Kitty") wallpaper. Am I correct in assuming that a wall like that 5120x1024 would be too big to submit? If so, do I just post it to one of my outside sites and link to it in the comments for PAK??
