ICQ

By Posted April 30, 2007 08:06:46External Link
Greetings... A very embarassing noob question to whomever cares to answer: I just downloaded IP Brainiac's 'fathom' WindowBlind, whith a whatchamacallit (in fact called ICQ), and I haven't the faintest idea of what it might be, what kind of program opens it (none listed even mentions it) and in what file I should store it. Anyone ready to give a hand, or is it hopeless ? Thanks to all anyway

'ICQ' is ham radio - 'speak' for 'I seek you'...which is a general call sign.

The proggy 'ICQ' is a personal messenger like Trillian, MS Messenger, etc. ...and is skinnable, hence its inclusion with other 'skinnables'...

O
Oh, someone read me. Thanks so much Jafo. I'd forgotten how early it is in your part of the world (Here in Paris it's past 4 P-M. Just one more thing, though: A I supposed to store it in the same file than the WB itself, or elsewhere?
Thanks again.

Help, anybody? Just two things: where do I store this ICQ, and is it at all necessary to bother since I don't HAVE a personnal messenger (that I know of).
P-S: this is a barely disguised 'Bump', courtesy of Master Brainiac's teachings...

It states on that skin:

An update to the first skin I ever made.Lots of new stuff, this skin has been thru a lot of changes.
Still a bit wild but more usable now.Right click is rollup.Wall,WMP,and ICQ skin here
Link
Enjoy and please delete the old skin if you have it before installing.

So what he is saying is that IF you own the program ICQ, he has included a SKIN for that program, and it would need to be moved to the ICQ Skin folder whatever folder that is.

If you do NOT have ICQ (and since you dont know the initials, i would assume this is the case), just ignore the file, or delete it.

I think the attitude of some of the responses are based on things like people asking questions on something that can easily be looked up with google. A lot of people ask questions like "what is windowblinds" or "what is DesktopX". Why not take that exact question and put it into google (or your search engine of choice) and see what it returns, then if it still doesnt make sense try posting.

I think on a daily basis there are tons of people asking "i downloaded...xxxxx and it doesnt do anything" yet they never looked at the top of the page where they downloaded the skin from where it has info on what is needed to run that skin.

Just my 0.02

As an afterthought... I am sure that people at Wincustomize and Stardock are aware that their little community's 'citizenship' has grown woldwide. Therefore, and not being an exclusive north-american club (I am french, and had never heard about ICQ until yesterday), it might be profitable for all to cut back on abbreviations and colloquialisms that might be misunderstood or altogether not undersood by the non-anglo citizens of your growing little world. Just an idea. And you're right, RomanDa. After visiting the ICQ site, I've decided to give up on it. Not my thing at all. Thank you again for enlightening me.

my main suggestion to anyone who has a question on things, do 2 mins of research on-line, google, yahoo, ASk, about, whatever you like. It is amazing how much info you can gain from a simple search like "what is ICQ"

The TOP result on google for the above search is:

Web definitions for ICQ
ICQ ("I Seek You") is a program you can download that will let you know when friends and contacts are also online on the Internet.

The 2nd listing on that search is the companies web site.

i do agree with some of the perceived attitude in the posts, most really are joking, but some are not. I think that is mainly because we (people who have been here a 'while') get the same (or near the same) questions all the time.

If you go into the forums and put in the search "HOW DO I" you will see over 23 PAGES of posts. Probably 50-60% of those would never have been needed at all if the person posting would have looked on google for 1 min. Im not picking on you at all, just trying to explain the frustration behind some posts.

I love to look at a post and see "can DesktopX do .... " or "I have a script that needs help" or even "whats the best s/w for ... " its the other ones like..

How do i open .wba files?
how do i install themes?
How do i apply it?
how do install themes
How do I take a screen shot of my desktop?
How do I download stuff??

ALL have been answered on here DOZENS of times, of not HUNDREDS of times. But no one wants to take the 2 mins to type in a search here or on google. Its amazing how many google searches point to posts here.

This Q: How do i open .wba files?
Results 1 - 10 of about 88,200 for How do i open .wba files?.

But does anyone look at that, no, they add another post, and another, etc....

so, i say all that to say this... before you ask for someone to hand feed you info, take 2 mins and see if you can find the answers yourself. It's so much more satisfying to learn something new on your own then to be TOLD the answer.

I really wasnt picking on you per sa, i was jsut venting a little on the over state of the q's i see here.

Im not all bite.. LOL

Damn R-DA dude, you feeling cranky today?

May 2, 2007 07:37:55
Pot, kettle, black!, sir Bichur? I wholeheartedly agree that people asking for info lying just under their noses - or not too far from it are a pain from which you can become sick fast enough. But ignorance because of language/cultural differences miht earn some slack and leniency. If at all possible. ICQ might have been skinner's coded langange, for all I knew. However, I must admit Google search never came to mind. My mistake. Someone should start a olloquialism/slang/pofessionnal speak and abbreviations tutortial for the enlightment of those of us raised on Queen's English and pretty much nothing else.
Good luck all in you artistic endeavours. I envy you.
May 2, 2007 15:35:22
It's not so much about abbreviations or slang speak in that ICQ *is* the program's actual name. Kind of like mIRC or AIM or MSN...they *might* be abbreviations but that is how the programs are referred to. LOL, BTW, FTW...now those are slang-type abbreviations that could use some explanation for new users.

When in doubt....Google.
