Firefox 3 Release & Stardock Site Compatibility
Jul 30, 2008 12:59

Firefox 3.0 goes final and is scheduled for release on Tuesday, June 17th.

There are currently known incompatibilities between Firefox 3 and many of our sites and forums. For the most part, the sites function properly, but have formatting issues. A specific example are the login & password fields to log into these forums. In Firefox 3, instead of both being on the same line, they are stacked vertically.

We will be addressing these visual issues in time. Please do NOT post threads on the forums pointing out Firefox 3 site issues. They will be deleted. We are aware of the problems and will work as quickly as we can to resolve them.

Until posted otherwise, the only version of Firefox our sites support at the moment is Firefox 2.

Turning The Tables

Perhaps you have received an email that starts something like this...

"Greetings in Jesus' name, dear friend, I am the widow of Idi Amin."

Perhaps you receive several hundred of them on a regular basis. They are known as '419 Scams; , named after a section of the Nigerian penal code. In the email, someone will claim that they need your assistance in acquiring some large amount money that is held up in probate, etc. The catch is, they need some money from you in order to do it. Of course, your reward for helping will be substantially larger than your investment and well worth the effort.

According to the U.S. State Department, ;Thousands of American citizens fall for these scams each year, and some victims lose thousands of dollars in the process.'

Well, if you've been totally annoyed by them and wondered what could possibly be done about it, someone may finally have the answer.

There is a group known as scambaiter's that go after these guys. It's rather funny. Instead of deleting the email, they respond. In the case of the video below, they told the scammer's that they were film producers offering a cash grant or prize to budding new film artists. They convince the scammer to re-enact the famous Monty Python 'Dead Parrot' sketch. The idea is to humiliate the scammers by getting them to submit photo's, video's, etc., that the scambaiter's then post on their site. This one made it to YouTube.

The funny thing is, the scammer, according to Mike Berry, who was instrumental in getting them to make this video, are still waiting for their cash prize! In an interview on NPR, Mike said he currently had them believing that the man with the money is being held in a Spanish prison on pornography charges. They still don't know that they themselves have been scammed, even though this video has hit number one on YouTube.

Watched the show Judge Judy where a 68 yr old women after putting an ad for a boarder in a local paper received a money order from a women in Nigeria with 3,000.00 more than the rent with the request that the remainder be returned. Of course the money order was bad...but the bank cashed it and now that women..on a pension has to pay it back...

The missus used to get 'em, and this one time we replied to an email requesting that we deposit USD $6.5 mill in our account to save it falling into the hands of a corrupt gov't.

We had every intention of helping them....NOT, so we strung them along for about a week with excuses as to why we couldn't do it immediately....

Yeah, we had the federal authorities watching us very closely - involved in illegal immigration we were - and we had to be careful so as not to expose the (preposterous amount of) illegal immigrants (4000) hiding in our attic...

Then came the sting...we asked that they forward $10,000 to help feed these poor unfortunates. After all, we couldn't let them starve to death, stink up our attic and bring the feds right to our door, now could we!

Needless to say, our request for a portion of our share was ignored and no further correspondence was entered into.

Guess the scammers gather over coffee to brag about their conquests....bemoan their failures amongst fellow practitioners. Haven't received another since.
