Customize your Right-Click Menu with Stardock's RightClick

RightClick Walkthrough

By Posted January 3, 2007 19:06:18

RightClick is a program that sometimes doesn't get enough attention, but I have to tell you it's one of the most useful app's on my desktop.  For those who don't know, RightClick is part of the Object Desktop Ultimate suite, or available as a stand-alone product.  It will basically let you design your own right-click menu and let you add items such as short-cuts, folders, and even DesktopX Widgets.

With that being said lets run through the basics of RightClick and show users how they can setup RightClick and customize the menu for the way you want it to work.

Now here is your "normal" right-click menu.....

"Normal" Right-click menu

You can arrange your desktop icons, and even create a new folder.  It's very limited to what you can do, so lets fire up RightClick from Stardock and see how we can improve our right-click menu.

Lets take a look at the configuration window which you can access by right-clicking the tray icon and selecting "Edit Desktop Menu".  In the "Content" tab you add/remove items from your right-click menu.  You can add a clock, programs menu, taskbar, shortcuts, widgets, and more!  Just select the item you want and click "Add".  From there you can configure the specifics of the item, such as choosing which DesktopX widget to use, or which shortcuts to link to.

RightClick Configuration

In the "Skins" tab you can choose the skin you wish to use, or you can choose to have RightClick inherit the WindowBlinds skin you are using.  You can even adjust the transparency of the menu.  Several skins are already included with RightClick, but there are hundreds available to download at the RightClick gallery on WinCustomize.  Many of these skins are made to match WindowBlind skins, so it's not too hard to make a desktop with matching skins.

With the "Hotkey" tab you can select a hotkey that will bring up your desktop menu.

There is almost a countless amount of configuration varieties you could come up with for your right-click menu.  One of my favorite features is the ability to insert the Programs menu, taskbar programs, and even the system tray.   Another really cool feature is that you can add RSS feeds to your right-click menu.  In the screenshot below you can see several different configurations of RightClick showing some of it's features.

Great article ID. Thanks for pointing out how cool RightClick is.

I set up my wife with RightClick after she saw my ObjectBar. She didn't need anything as powerful as I had, but she wanted more than what she had with the Windows default.

Right click is probably the easiest of the "productivity" apps in the ObjectDesktop suite to configure and you get a huge bang for your buck.

One of the coolest features? Being able to assign a hotkey to bring up RC when the desktop is covered!

I had never tried it until reading this article, great job on the article, rightclick is indeed very useful. Maybe you could cover the other customizable programs as well. I'd definitely be interested in more articles like this one.

It's the quickest, easiest way to get to any program, folder, or drive that I've found. No need to move the mouse anywhere to access it, and the hotkey to bring it up on top of a window is great! Definately my most "can't do without" app.

I will try to cover them all.

Definately my most "can't do without" app.

Me Too!

For those who create DX Widgets......it would be nice to have some designed to fit within a RC menu (very few fit well). Some of the one's I'd most like to see are a weather widget thats like 5 lines of text with maybe a 16x16 icon for each line. A better looking & more modular option for the system monitors that are available. A dictionary look up that you can paste into...wait no that's for object bar......but you get my drift.

That's a great idea Lantec.  Some of the widgets I try don't fit very well, it would be nice to see some "minimalistic" widgets that would work with RC.

I have been using it probably since it came out. Can't do without it. All it needs is a "Save Configuration", 'cause I hate to turn off my computer, and when I turn it on, and right click, all I have is a box. i know all you have to do is unload it, when you get what you want on there, but that doesn't always work.

RC definately needs some more work, but nevertheless it's great. Hope it will stay and developed further.

Indeed very good and powerful tool but just have to seriously absolutely agree that all it needs is a "Save Configuration" so I can save trouble reconfiguring some of the items or even with bad luck everything all over whenever my set configuration doesn't any more show up on starting my computer!!

Begging for this for years already...

For those that make the RC skins, being able to use pngs, instead of just bmps, would make their work so much easier!

Yeah, this is one of the can't live without apps for me. And I only started using it about 2 months ago (so I'm a bit slow, leave me alone). Great article ID, looking forward to more like this.
